How do I talk my wife in to an aquarium? She thinks it is going to cause a lot of mess. I have not had one since I was a kid. After I saw this site and all your nice pictures, I really want to get one. Well if any one has pros vs cons for an aquarium, let me know.

Any response appreciated.

Pros:

Aquariums can be a beautiful centerpiece for a living room, and is a great conversation starter, if properly maintained.

A larger tank is easier to maintain than a smaller one.

Aquariums can help lower high blood pressure.

Its better than watching a TV. :dive2:

Cons:

Its a lot of work to keep maintained and beautiful.

Some fish need special care to be healthy

If not maintained, it can stick up the whole house

If not properly leveled, the tank can burst; bye bye floor

Can be rough on your back changing water every week/2weeks

What you can do is get a small tank (small meaning ~30G because smaller tanks could be more maintenance) that is simple and pretty self maintaining to get her "feet wet" :D

I have a 29G that is very self maitaining. No plants, and good amount of fish. It has some good decor with some driftwood which make it appealing. It has 8 Yellow Labs and one 12" Pleco that does not know when to stop growing. It also has two pond snails that reproduce often which feed the pleco and yellow labs (they love snails).

I change water once a week and clean one of the filter sponges (AC 500). Total maintenance time is ~45 minutes AND that includes feedings (~5 minutes a day).

WHen she realizes tanks can not be high maintenance you can drop the pretty tanks on her may it be sw or fw.

There are no cons Brutus Just tell her it is a tank or a mid-life crisis corvette...
I wonder if I can use that excuse later on to get a bigger tank when we get a house - hmmm, think of the possibilites

Good luck on your quest

Xielos is right tanks are proven to lower blood pressure and they are a great decoration for your house they can be a bit pricy (well for me atleast im only 16 with a girlfriend and no job) to set up but overall i wouldnt say they are troublesome to maintain esp. if you have hardy fish but i have never had a regret spending money on my tanks except for when i first started i put dwarf puffers in with an angelfish BIG mistake

I thought of more points....

Btw - tanks are great. My fiance and I live in an apartment (cant wait for house) and we have MANY tanks. Before I met her I could care less about fish. Now she has created a aquarist MONSTER :p:

We have 1 55G, 1 30G, 1 29G full aquarium, 1 29G Vivarium with firebellies (boy are they LOUD!!), 1 10G and 2 5.5G's now. The 5.5G tanks are displayed in our entertainment center piers - one on each side. That is 134Gallons of tanks to maintain. I maintain the two 29G's, 1 30G and 1 5.5G. It takes me ~2.5Hours a week to maintiain them. WIth ~70% of the time being on my 30G which is planted.

Tanks can be QUITE the decor accent to an ensemble (if that makes any sense). We sort of go for the whole jundle/wildlife ensemble in our living room - I think that is what it is called...

Again, Good luck

DAMMIT! BE A MAN! Don't ask...just get it....if there is a mess, tell her to clean it up!

Now, with your next wife, may I suggest that you use the "it's an attractive piece of furniture" con, or...."doctor says it will cure my (insert disease here)"......tell her that studies show it will relieve her stress, particularly when you pis her off...like when you buy a fish tank....tell her you are fish sitting for a friend named Joe......two months later, tell her your friend Joe was abducted by aliens and is being probed 300 million light years away and won't be coming back....maybe say its a baptismal pool for your new found religion? You see, there are many, practical arguments for getting a fish tank....show us the pics real soon!

yeah somtimes just doing it works the best -lol- she will think the fish are cute anyways :argue:

I started my tank by using the excuse that it was for my son. I bought a 10 gal. so it wouldn't be so obvious. Now she knows it was for me, but what she didn't realize is that she is now hooked. I even caught her searching on ebay for a larger tank...WooHoo...Good Luck...

it is true that it can be pricy but if you really want a tank you can find some one selling things cheap thats why most people come on here because im only 14 with no job or allowance and i have two tanks a 10g with plants cryptos, watersprite, and grass and one piece of driftwood. the fish are a couple baby guppies(that luckily aren't getting eaten, but i hope i can add the rest of my guppies) 3 white clouds, sucker fish, skunk loach, and two other fish that im not quite sure what they are and my tank is doing fine. they are also extremely fun to look at, so fun in fact my friend snuck into my room when i was watching my fish that i wouldnt even have realized him if he didnt say something. but i also have a 50g trying to get it off the ground but since my parents arent even helping me its been sitting there since the beginning of the summer and the only way i got it was i was helpin out my moms friend and asked if they were using the fish tank and they so no so when they moved into my neighborhood i got it for free. so you could get lucky with something like that :thm:
