I want to make a paludarium!

You can see mine in the picture up there, near the middle. I haven't really tried to disguise it much, but you can tape wax paper (wax side out) to the outside of it and foam around it to hide it in the background. After the foam has cured, you just pull it out and peel off the wax paper. If you do it somewhere in the shelf you are making (perhaps the back corner?), you can make a waterfall with a stream that goes from the filter output to the edge of the shelf and then down into the water. The FBTs will like that. They prefer water that is somewhat shallow and slow moving. You'll be so happy with fire belly toads! They have the cutest call and are out and about during the day. I really miss mine. :( Your water should be ~2-4 inches deep (I'd say no more than 4"), so that will leave you room for a 1/2-1" gap between the top of the water and the bottom of your shelf, this will keep the soil from being saturated and spoiling. You'll need at least 2" of soil, on top of about 1" of gravel or LECA for drainage. That will leave you with ~5" above the top of your substrate for plants. You'll have to do some regular pruning, but it shouldn't be too much. Low growing plants like fittonia, some of the Peperomia sp., or some of the ground covers you can get from the nursery or places like HD would be perfect. You want to make sure whatever you get doesn't need full sun, it's difficult to replicate the strength of full sun without spending a ton on equipment, electricity, and without blinding yourself and your herps, lol...

Oops! Almost forgot, alot of folks use the fluval filters. One of the ones for a 10g tank will be sufficient for what you need.

Gosh, you've just had me dreaming up all sorts of ideas... I think I might go outside and work on my palu for the newt (or maybe the one for the frogs and salamander)... Hmmm.... decisions, decisions...

I know!!!! THESE ARE ADDICTING!!! What if I got a Fire Belly Newt along with 4 FBT. Would I want to keep a 4" deep water section or what should I do.

Awesome advice, after fishing today I'll begin preparing....

Some folks mix FBN with FBTs, but I don't recommend it, especially if you've never kept either species alone before. With herps, community tanks are possible with the right amount of experience and compatible species, but it isn't the same as a community tank of fish. Start with the FBTs and later on make a bigger tank for them and get some FBNs for the old little tank. Once you've kept them for a few months to a year and you have the care down for both species and feel that you will be able to recognize stress (can be difficult to recognize stress before it's too late, especially with amphibs), then try putting them together in the larger space.

4 FBTS is the MOST you can house in a 10g, with the large amount of land and water you'll be providing. Without the large land surface afforded by the shelf and the larger volume of water it allows, 3 would be pushing it, hard... Be sure to watch for any aggression during feeding time with more than two in a 10g.

Just stick with the FBTs for now, or go with strictly FBN. I don't think you'll be disappointed at all with the FBTs though, they are very amusing, great little frogs (yes, they are actually frogs and not truly toads).

EDIT: I didn't get to work on my paludariums yesterday, but my hubby gave me the go ahead to ignore the housework and work on them today! YAY! lol... I'll be posting build thread when I finish, if you want to get an idea of how to do the shelf, I know I'll be doing that at least for the newt. She's going to love having more space again. :) My frogs seem to be fine and dandy being held in a rubbermaid, so I'm not in a hurry to get their's done yet.

I actually kept a FBT a few years ago, but he died after a power outage in the winter.... can't wait to see your new home for the newt!!!

Update time

I've been grounded and all progess has been halted....
Now I have to reconvice them into letting me have another tank.......

That really sucks! Just think of it as a way to learn more about what you want to do and gather info. like Chris said.

It's been too hot out here to work on my tank, but it should be cooling down again tomorrow. I'll get it started and post a build log so you can get an idea of one way to build the shelf I was talking about.

I'll post here to let you know when I get the thread started, ok?

Aww that sucks! Grounding does nothing. :silly: :wall:

Hopefully the grouding can help you plan, lol!

I have been looking at the pallaudiums on youtube for 3 straight hours..........
:1zhelp:

ps. thanks froggsong!!! You've been awesome in keeping me educated about these! Can't wait to see the tank!
