You can see mine in the picture up there, near the middle. I haven't really tried to disguise it much, but you can tape wax paper (wax side out) to the outside of it and foam around it to hide it in the background. After the foam has cured, you just pull it out and peel off the wax paper. If you do it somewhere in the shelf you are making (perhaps the back corner?), you can make a waterfall with a stream that goes from the filter output to the edge of the shelf and then down into the water. The FBTs will like that. They prefer water that is somewhat shallow and slow moving. You'll be so happy with fire belly toads! They have the cutest call and are out and about during the day. I really miss mine.
Your water should be ~2-4 inches deep (I'd say no more than 4"), so that will leave you room for a 1/2-1" gap between the top of the water and the bottom of your shelf, this will keep the soil from being saturated and spoiling. You'll need at least 2" of soil, on top of about 1" of gravel or LECA for drainage. That will leave you with ~5" above the top of your substrate for plants. You'll have to do some regular pruning, but it shouldn't be too much. Low growing plants like fittonia, some of the Peperomia sp., or some of the ground covers you can get from the nursery or places like HD would be perfect. You want to make sure whatever you get doesn't need full sun, it's difficult to replicate the strength of full sun without spending a ton on equipment, electricity, and without blinding yourself and your herps, lol...
Oops! Almost forgot, alot of folks use the fluval filters. One of the ones for a 10g tank will be sufficient for what you need.
