Ich breakout

If you have ammonia, then do a water change. If your fish are sick then they will have even more trouble than usual dealing with the ammonia. The dead fish could cause it I suppose. Have you done anything else that could hurt your bacteria lately? Antibiotics or anything?

No antibiotics. Only meds I have added are the Melafix and salt. I have had 2 fish die on me within the past 2 days. After I saw the first one dead, I did a 30% water change. Since I don't have a lot of time, I am gonna have to resort to the Amquel for now and hope that holds until I get home from school tonight. Besides the ammonia is on the lower end of the scale; but still, ammonia is ammonia. I won't get back home till around 10pm when i am done with night school.

How much total salt did you add? Increasing salinity should be done gradually--adding the full amount of salt all at once can stress fish. It should be done over time, by adding a portion of the total dosage to a jar of tank water, dissolve, and then poured in. Wait an hour, add another portion.

Also--adding salt and a medication--not good. Melafix can cause low oxygen levels, and heating the tank in addition reduces the amount of O2 the water can hold--serious problem, especially for bottom dwellers.

Your best bet for now is to test salinity, maintain the heat, and start doing water changes. The heat alone will kill the parasite, and the water changes will gradually get the water back to 'normal'. Mixing treatment methods is not advised, as medications can and do react with one another, causing worse problems than the original symptom you were treating.

OrionGirl: I added just what the box said. 1 teaspoon per 5 gallons fo water. I added 8 teaspoons to my 37 gallon. I have also added 2 full doses of melafix. Should I stop dosing and just do the water changes??? Would 5 gallons of water per change be to littleof amount?? Thats about 13.5% of the water. Thanks!!

Like I said before, I have not dealt with any problems before introducing the clown pleco Friday. Kinda frustrates me because after keeping fish for 2 or 3 years and not having any problems, I thought I was really good. But this situation goes to show that I have way more to learn. Thanks for the help!

EDIT: What would be a preferred temp to keep these guys at right now?? I have it 78 degrees F. Thanks!

I would do larger water changes to try and get rid of that ammonia. Like said above, sick fish have an even harder time dealing with ammonia. I would say in the range of about 20%-25% a day. I'm sure you will get al sorts of suggestions though.

I would also pump up the tempature slightly to around 80 to help fight off that ich. But seeing as you are already at 78 this may not be nessesary.

I just changed 25% of the water. I have noticed that my 2 angels my be getting that cloudy eye thing. Like on my gold, one eye has a slight haze to it and the other has a thin strip of white going across the lens. Any ideas??? Thanks!

I just had a look at my gold angel again and his right eye (when she is facing me) is getting red aread where it was once gold. I need some idea of what to do. Thanks!

EDIT: I just did a quick search and the whitish film could either mean poor water quality (more than likely), chlorine poisoning (shouldn't be I use Amquel), or eye fluke (hope not). I am hoping it is just poor water quality.

I would like to know how my tank all of a sudden decided to turn for the worst once I introduced that pleco. I did proper acclimation procedures. I mean, once he died, the whole tank turned upside down. I don't understand it. :sad

EDIT: I tested my ammonia again and it's holding at 0.5ppm to 1ppm. I don't understand why the ammonia would be up but the Nitrite is 0 and Nitrates are minimal. There is somethng in the water causing the ammonia, but what??? Could my tank be cycling again??? Thanks!

That is very possible, indeed. When I got to the pleco, he was falling apart bad. What I ought to do is to night after school, clean both filters and see if that helps any.

Well, after observing the fish for a while, I'd say they are close to normal. They are eating like they are supposed to and what not. Hopefully my battle is almost over!

EDIT: HA! My ammonia is almost nonexistant now!!! I just tested it is not somewhere between 0 and 0.5ppm. I'm gonna go ahead with filter cleaning (doesn't hurt anyhow) and another waer change and I should begood! WOOT!
