I see lots of varying opinions...but what do you guys think? Say you got some Ick in your tank, what do you use?

Salt and heat?

Meds?

I'm treating for a minor ich outbreak right now - I've got snails, plants and shrimp in the tank, as well as catfish and tetras. I don't think it's wise to put something that could poison any of my tank's inhabitants, so I'm treating with salt, heat, large daily water changes and using a diatom filter periodically to eliminate any free-swimming parasites. It's a bit labour intensive, but I don't mind.

I have had great success using heat and QuICK Cure. I guess I am lazy :D

I use the salt and heat method, because I found it to be far less stressful on my fish and just as effective as meds. I would not say that meds aren't effective though, only that they cause more stress.

Its difficult to say for sure what induces the most stress. In my limited experience I have only lost fish while using the salt/heat method. This was a particular virulent case and the fish may have been too weak to recover with any treatment method. I like increasing the heat some and adding meds at a lower dose over a longer period of time.

We prefer to use salt/heat/water changes to combat any disease. We have been fortunate that our tank is extremely stable, in the 17 months it has been running, we have not had any outbreaks of any diseases. Also, because of the size of the tank, to treat with medication runs about $100 - $200 each dose and that can quickly add up!

Salt and heat worked for me.

Has anyone tried the "transfer" method? I started to try it, but ended up doing the salt/heat treatment instead.

I hear that. Meds are much more expensive where I live!!! I prefer salt to meds for most treatable diseases, sometimes you have no choice but to use meds but then I use a QT.
