I have a red serpae tetra that has a white fluffy looking thing in one gill. I looked up ich and it said it looked like a grain of salt. This looks somewhat larger and not encapsulated. Any ideas of what it might be? All fish acting okay.

Most likely fungus or bacterial infection from the description. Definately not ich based on your description. I'm not well versed in treatments for fungal and bacterial infections so I'll defer suggestions to the more knowledgeable folks.

is your tank cycled? What are your test results? I think cotton type fungus can sometimes be a cause of poor water conditions that encourage bacteria, so that might be the first thing to check. I have successfully cleared up a mild case of cotton fungus of the mouth with nothing more than more frequent water changes for a while
