ICH treatment safe for....

OK, I reached day three of the treatment.... I did a 50% water change, and am ready to dose #4. Is it safe to step down to a half a dose at this point?

How's the treatment working? This is where you need to use some judgement. If it hasn't cleared up the problem, what I would probably do is continue with the next 3-day cycle -- full strength. Then, if it hasn't finished the ich, do the big water change and try another type treatment. Maybe something like Coppersafe. That's just me. You're there looking at the fish, so use your judgement about what is happening. Good luck.

The fish all look great. I just wanted to make sure that if there was any ICH left in its cyst form, that I killed it when it becomes free-swimming. I figure a half dose will manage this without exposing the fish to this chemical full-strength for any longer than they need...

anybody agree? disagree? not care?

I would treat for the Ich for at least 7 days straight. Some even recommend 14 days. I am not an expert and dealing with Ich right now. I have been treating my tank for only 4 days with Maricide by Mardel, the fish look great now, but I will keep up the daily 25% water changes and keep up the treatment for at least 4 more days. I do not want to treat this again.

Ich sucks!

I agree!!!!!

I'm going to continue the treatment at 1 drop per 2 gallons with a 50% water change every three days for at least another week. hopefully that will do it in!
On the downside, all the silicone as well as my airline in the tank are now permanitly blue... *shrug* shouldhave quarentiened that betta... *sigh*

I just picked up three cherry barbs and two otto cats today. Looking into one of the tanks with the second male cherry barb I got, I noticed two H. Rasboras with ick on them. I told the lfs attendant about the problem as he scooped out my barb and then showed him the exact fish with the problems.

Should I start doing some preventative treatments with my quarantine tank, or should I see if they even develop any signs of ick first?

My guess is that it wouldn't hurt them so long as I take it slow for the next 4 weeks of Q using higher temperatures and salt. I really don't want to loose my fish I just got. I had just moved my danios to the Q tank because of their fry starting to appear.

Btw, the attendant used water from an ick free tank. All of their water that is used for fish is UV sterilized in the back rooms, so there shouldn't be any risk of getting it in the other tanks.

Rid-ich and maracyn I & II

Hi all,

I am new to the messageboard. Just thought I would post what I am doing currently in my 10 gallon aquarium with three red wag platys, a pl*co, and one fry red wag platy. Ok, a little pre-history first. One of the three red wag platy's I bought from LFS must have been pregnant when I bought her. Two days after adding them to my tank I had 8-10 fry in the main community tank. So I bought a small 2.5 gallon and some white gravel and fake plants and moved all the platy fry( or so I thought) to the smaller "nursery". Turned out that there was still one fry who had gone un-noticed and I haven't been able to catch the little bugger, he is quick and sneaky too.

I read all the articles on the web I could find about ich (google on Ichthyophthirius multifiliis). Since I have a catfish, I am using Rid-Ich, which uses a multiple checmical and lower dosage of the malachite green .05 ppm. I did the 25% water removal and then split the one-teaspoon dosage of Rid-ich in two. And pre-mixed the Rid-ich into the replacement water 12.5%. I added a tablet of Marcyn with the first Rid-ich and crushed the really stirred it a lot to make sure the tablet dissolved before added the water back into the tank.

The reason I added antibiotics is to treat the small scrapes one of the fish gave herself while flashing against the sides of the driftwood and gravel. She was the original carrier of the Ich, I believe. In case any of the fish had secondary infections I added Maracyn-II (two tablets initial day, one tablet the following for five days total) to the second 12.5% tank water change.

I was concerned about the amount of rid-ch building up ovetime with only 25% water changes. Tonight I will do the second night of dosing with the rid-ich and maracynI & II. I have seen the baby fry platy since the initial dose, he is swimming around. So this is definitely a mild non-toxic treatment.

Sorry for the long post.

Well, one of the otto cats kicked the bucket in the night. I'm going to ask the lfs why and bring in a water sample. If everything checks out that I'm doing things right, they'll replace the fish.

I noticed on the male cherry barb from the infected tank there was a slight whitish discoloration near the lateral line. He also looks assymetric when viewed from above. One side seems to bulge out a little more. Well, thank goodness for quarantine tanks, right?

Do you think that that male might be infected with ick by now?

Scratch that, the male barb who I thought was sick died too. I'm going in to get the water checked for everything. B4 I got the tank, it was a hamster cage, but I rinsed out the tank pretty well and it's been stable for 3 weeks now... I'm so confused.

I think I just saved my plecto!

I dosed another 5 drops thismorning and left for school. I came back home a few hours later and glanced in all my tanks. I noticed my plecto was lying on the bottom as usuall, but her fins were all clamped, and she was almost grrey in color, not her normal bright yellow! I tapped the glass to see if she'd move, and when she did I dropped my backpack on the floor and ran for the python. about 30 min's after a 50% water change she is back to bright yellow and sucking all over the glass. *phew* now that I think about it that bay have been a 4th dose without a waterchange instead of the normal three. I was soo sleepy thismorning that I forgot to count doses!!!! :thud: Anyhow, thank goodness she's ok, I'd die if I lost her... she's my favorite fish! lesson learned: Keep track of doses more carefully!
