Ick... Help. Also, Applus+ Ick meds?

Yeah, when I was first adding the salt it was very slowly precisely because I was concerning about the copper medicine still being in the tank and not yet completely filtered by the AC. I really doubt that was the problem, other than just adding the salt at all into an already stressed tank with (for whatever reason) a particularly vulnerable population (the tetras).

Edit: And yes, it was predisolved in tank water before being added to the tank.

I had an ich problem in my barb tank..I tried salt and raising the temp.rid ich etc
the ich was able to re-establish in the tank.

In this tank I had tiger barbs(albino, green and std)
the green eventually died off.
this problem kept re-occurring every few weeks.
some of the things I learned, som fish are carriers of ich..weird huh. apparently these green barbs were.

they all died off. I also learned that you can treat for ich but..you may also have a secondary bacterial infection(this get to using gram positive and gram negative anti biotics)

the green barbs died from a secondary infection.
out of frustration I used copper-safe..recommended since the copper will remain in the tank for 30 days(actully I learned trace copper may be in the tank for the entire life of the tank)
the copper will effectively kill ich you don't have to raise the temp but you must make sure any charcoal media is atleast a week old.(yes, charcoal will remove some of the copper) since this treatment it's been well over a month and no more ich..

I have replaced the charcoal(to assist removal of the copper) and done water changes.

I still have 3 albinos and a std barb in the tank..10 gallon.

raising the temp I know will assist in speeding up the ich cycle..you can only deal with the ich when it is in the 'free swimming' stages atleast that what I was told(reputable fish doc)

good luck

Well, it looks like the Ich is good and gone. The tank has been at 86 degrees with 3 tablespoons salt per gallon for ten days. Unfortunately, the stock has been decimated. I lost 7 cardinal tetras, 3 guppies, 1 male swordtail, 1 red-tail shark, and probably an Oto (unless he's hiding). On the plus side, my tank faves have all survived including a rainbow cichlid, a striata botia loach, and clown pleco. The female swordtail and two danios are also fine.

I'm gradually taking the salt out and plan on restocking in a few weeks. A sad and trying event, but one that I think I've learned a lot from it and this will give me an opportunity to re-focus the tank.

Thanks to everyone for the help and advice. It's much appreciated, and helped me save the fish that I still have.
