hi,

i have a single betta with ick in my 10G Q-tank. i will be transferring the betta into a new betta tank soon and was wondering how i could sterilize my 10G for more additions.

will ick survive out of water for any period of time? i was thinking of using hot water to sterilize it. any experiences?

thanks!

Leave the tank up, raise the temp to 84, run with no fish for 3 weeks. Lacking a host, the parasites will all die off.

Make sure the betta is completely clear of the parasite (no signs for one week minimum) before moving it to the new tank.

thanks for the link!

based on what you've written, it would mean that if i completely dry out the 10G Q-tank, it would be itch-free..

also, if i transfer the betta to a new single fish tank, i can treat it there as well without any problems..

just one question, how much salt should i be adding? i have added approximately 4 tablespoons of salt since yesterday... is that enough for a 10G as somehwere in your article you mentioned 1 tablespoon per gallon?

thanks in advance!

Based on what you've written, you didn't read OrionGirl's recommendation. If you need to be told that drying out the gravel means starting again with a new cycle, then you should be gently reminded that there is a Newbie Forum here at AC. The difference is, in the Newbie Forum no one will ever shred your tailfin, aquatix02.

hi Wetman, from the hint of sarcasm in your tone, i would like to apologise if i'd bothered you with my remarks.. just to clear things up a little..

i'm aware that drying the gravel out would un-cycle my tank. however, my thoughts were more to re-using the q-tank, uncycled, but added with a load of new uninfected java ferns and anubias and gravel from my established main tank. with this, coupled with regular 3-4th day water changes and minimal feeding, i had hoped that i would actually get away with adding a few small new fishes without stressing them.

the betta in the new tank would also survive with minimal stress as i plan to do the same with it as well.

the main reason i had originally posted this question was that i wanted to figure out a way that i could get some new additions that i really liked at the LFS. i didn't want them to be sold by the time i cured my betta in my sole q-tank.

also, i said what i said in my previous reply because i wanted to simply confirm with you that ich is not able to survive out of water. the intention was to get my q-tank up and ready as quickly as possible while avoiding the use of bleach or other strong chemicals.

i'm not trying to act like i know everything... because i obviously don't... i just hope that this clears things up and i would like to apologise again for my comments if they had bothered you. i was not aware that this was a flame forum and that the newbie forum was not. i'll proof-read my replies a little more next time.

Just don't do anything radical to the tank the betta has been in. Leave it heated and lit in the normal way for-- say a week to be sure-- and the Ich will have died out.

How can one mention a Newbie Forum without being cruel? What's so wrong about being a Newbie anyway? (Sarcasm is the emphatic statement of the opposite of what one means. Though my every fiber is ironic, there's not a sarcastic bone in my body.)

ok.. your comments are noted. thanks!

but i must say your website was a very interesting read.. good job... yours is definitely one of the better websites out there.

(and i'm not being sarcastic :) )
