ick

I have always heard yes it is and then you have the other side that says no it is not, well I don't care one way or another just as long as my fish are health and I don't have to worry about them dieing. :bday:

Here is another really good article on ich....

http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/ich.php

I see three main issues that affect the controversy surrounding what ich is and how to treat it...

1. Not understanding the life cycle
2. Once a method of treatment is chosen, it is not used exactly per the directions or for long enough
3. Ich strains are much more resistant to treatment then they were in the past - years ago, ich was a minor annoyance that I knocked out with higher temps alone.

I have that problem at the moment. "My" strain is obviously heat- and salt-resistant. At least more so than the fish.

I ran into one of these 'resistant' strains about a year ago..I had to resort to malachite green/victoria green.

I have found that most of the time when people try and treat ich they do not do it for a long enough time frame to kill all the ich in the tank. The first time that I ran into ich, I only treated for a couple of days and then found out it can take up to three weeks. I used Malichite Green the first time and killed all of my bacteria in the tank. The next time I used a longer time frame and salt with high heat and it worked. I have not had any problems after that, Thank god. :p:

I treated one time with salt and heat for 21 days..the ich came back..I retreated for 28 days (salt and heat) it came back. I finally resorted to victoria green (jungle ich guard) and the ich went away.

I use a combination of formalin and malachite green. The scary thing with the heat- and salt-resistant strain is that the only effect that is left during the heat/salt treatment is the acceleration of the ich life cycle, with obviously unpleasant results.
