id help

got this guy from my bf. he doesn't know what it is. my son picked it out. i know it's hard to id juvies but i'd like to know how big it's going to get, ect. sorry my pics are not the best, i just have a point and shoot cheapo camera. it's about an inch and a half long and was one of the more expensive cichlids they had at the store(that may not mean anything though...lol)

Looks like a mbuna. The last picture looks yellow, does the fish have any yellow? Could be a johanni or Maingano.

Looks like Melanochromis joanjohnsonae, aka Exasperatus.

no yellow. he's tan and brown. right now his face looks sort of blueish. he's hiding in a coconut hut.

Definitely a mbuna. In the photos he looks quite blue, which made me think Melanochromis interruptus with the vertical barring in the first pic. If that's just stress barring then maybe johanni that is turning colors. But you say he's really tan and brown? Can you get better pics? Did the fish come from a situation where it could be a hybrid (ie mixed cichlid tank)? Looks like a Melanochromis species to me anyway, just not sure which.

I agree with theMelanochromis, could be a low quality johanni or something similar. He may need a day or so to settle in to see his true colors. He does look a bit stressed. What tankmates does he have right now?

i will try to get a better pic after. he looks totally different now. he is by himself in a 30g.

Hmm I'm still not sure. There is a chance it's a hybrid. Those are pretty common and since he seems to have many traits of different species.
