I'd like to ask your opinions

If you are going to that much trouble then yep, get some more ply and timber and build the stand. They are really easy to build...

I think for peace of mind I'm going to switch the frame to something stronger than 1x2 - maybe 2x2 - and I'll use the strongest/thickest ply I can get. I've seen pictures of much larger tanks on piers with open sections, so I'm pretty sure this will be okay. I'm going to explain what we're building to the people at Home Depot and hopefully they'll offer an opinion as well.
I'm absolutely posting a picture of this when it's done, so you guys can see it!

[edit]How frustrating! I went to HD, they had no cinder blocks and no regular bricks - all they had in stock were paving stones. So now it's back to thinking about a 2 x 4 stand :) I'll sort it out eventually, I'm sure.
I did get the tank, though, and it's so BIG! I'm very excited about getting it up and running, but it looks like it will be a while.[/edit]

dude i would have a 48x15x15 tank as its big i have a 24x12x12 and a 36X12X15 AND IVE JUST ORDED A 48X15X15 REMEBER THE BIGGER THE BETTER

Yes, you have a point, however my lighting is designed for a tank 36"L and I'm using a Rena FilStar XP2 (up to 75g rating). There's also a limited space for the tank physically - it sits in a 'nook' in our living room. Honestly, this 65g is more than enough tank for me!

Guys, I caved. My husband and I went to HD, priced the lumber and plywood, glue, screws, etc. as well as glass for a top, and it came out to quite a bit higher than we expected. He asked me if I'd like to spend a little extra and go back to the LFS for a top and stand, and I took him up on it. Really it is gorgeous, but I feel a bit like I cheated after all those plans to do it myself!

The tank is up and running, planted, with the diatom filter on it. Fish are still in a bucket, since their tank is a sea of flourite dust! I'll post pictures when it's all finished :)

The pylwood being larger than the tank footprint is not the issue. The possible flex or delection of the plywood without a support under its edges is highly significant. DIY is great if you have the engineering know-how and references to back it up. My tank room is more than half DIY stands, but I had the engineering back-up to be secure with the structure. An unsecured unupported piece of 1" ply is not suited to a cantilevered stand IMHO.

What about two unsupported planks of 2x8 (lying flat)? We have 2.5" (5" total) of overhang at the ends of the tank. It does not overhang front to back, however.

Sorry for resurrecting a year old thread, by the way
