ID on Rainbow fish pair

Are you sure they are the same species? They look rather different. I would say the first is a turquoise rainbow.

How large are they at the moment? Neither look much like Melanotaenia lacustris to me, but I could easily be wrong. Of the two, the top one looks more like it but the bottom ones are a little too blurry to tell.

Believe it or not, The top two pics are of the same two fish as the bottom two pics. That is why I am having trouble. The first and third is suppose to be the male and the second and fourth are suppose to be the female. The first two pics were when I just turned on the light. They were awake and running around in the last two which were taken about a week later. They are both about 4" long.

Really? The first two look oddly similar, as do the last two...

Anyways, Melanotaenia lacustris maxes out around 4" so I do not think that is what you have. The coloration at that size/age would be, in my estimation, much closer to the true colors.

If these are four inches already then I would have to say that they are not lacustris. Almost look like a hybrid, because the bodies do not have depth. Kind of like a young trifasciata in body style. I could be way wrong, but I do have an assortment of rainbows, including lacustris's. The body habitus looks to be juvenile, not adult like. Good luck in identifying them terminally. They are a few rainbow only websites that have experts in the forums. They could probably help you out the best. Rainbowfish.org?
