i tried posting this in the newbie forum, but someone suggested i post it here in the cichlids forum. its the best quality picture i was able to take

i got it from a lake in front of my house in south florida, they've been spawning recentally, because there are hundreds of them

could it be a mayan cichlid? thanks

thanks AkidoGuy, it very well could be...they certainly are aggresive enough, although it hasn't gone for my hand when it was in the tank...anyway, thanks again

Dude, you should report that, even if you don't tell them you kept some. Non-native fish 'dumped' by irresponsible fishkeepers are a big problem, especially since they become established breeders in the nice warm water there in Florida. There are agencies in place to deal with it.

Yep, just like all the other exotics that have become established in FL that go unchecked. They've been established in FL for a while, along with dozens and dozens of other exotics. They won't be able to do much if anything about it.

i think they realize, every 3 or 4 months the county sends a crew to check water quality and everything else. the lake had a huge algae outbreak after all those hurricanes last year and the county has been treating all canals and lakes pretty regularly. next time i see them out there, i'll let them know.

when i grabbed that fish i actually got two more, maybe you guys can help me id those as well, i hadn't posted the pictures because i hadn't really gotten any good ones...but i'll see if i can get a decent pic today.

this looks similar to the one you guys labeled as tilapia buttikoferi, but the markings on the fins are different, there is a ring of turquoise surrounding the ring of black on the tail fin and on one side of him. he is also much smaller and darker in general

this one is completely different in color and shape as the tilapia buttikoferi and the one in the previous post. he's also striped, but its much fainter than on the other two.

this is the best picture i've been able to get of the one you already labeled as tilapia buttikoferi
