I have got this moss in abundance in my garden, growing on rocks etc in humid areas. I was wondering if anyone can tell me what this is and if it can adapt to under water.

I would say it's "mood moss" - also called clump moss, cushion moss, or bun moss. It's commonly available commercially too in both fresh and dried form.. used for topiaries, floral arrangements, terrariums, various craft projects. If that's it, then no.. it's not aquatic. It might survive for a few months under water and then die off. Would not last indefinitely.

A lot of the aquatic moss "dealers" grab terrestial mosses all the time and try to sell them as truly aquatic ones. So pretty much anything we might find that's abundantly growing has, most likely, already been tried many times over for aquarium use. But.. since you have so much of it, you might as well do some testing with it just to see for yourself.

Here're some photos of mood moss for comparison. (The first 2 photos are huge, so you can click those for a close up view.)

Thanks Kashta, it looks exactly like that. I've put some on a few rocks in my outside tank. Lets see if it holds. If it stays for several months, it may well be worth it.

this has nothing to do with your q but i think this is really neat:

As we don't get many of the aquatic plant varieties here (ban on import), I'm trying to use what I can.
I'll post some pics next week of progress.

Must be somewhere mossy. I'm envious. I miss the mountains with trees, ferns, and mosses. Guess that's why I enjoy them so much in fish tanks.

I liked that one a lot, too.

Oh lordy.. it's by Martha Stewart. (Should've known.)

This is "ornamental faux moss," of all things. Found it at a floral supply website. LOL.

Not at all. I'm from Mauritius, which is very sunny but also moderately humid. We do get these moss but mostly in cooler parts like on river banks, forests etc
