Ideas for a 29g Planted Tank

In the next month or so I'll be aquiring a 29 gallon tank set up from a friend. The plan is that this tank will retire my 10g (or at least relegate it to a Q-tank).

Right now there are 4 zebra danios and 6 pygmy corys in the 10g as well as some low light plants. I'd like to get some bigger fish in the tank that could live with the existing residents of my 10g.

For instance, I love the clown loaches but I'm not sure if they would do well with the others or if the 29 is just too small for them. A shark of some type would be neat too but I'm pretty sure the pygmys would be a snack for him.

Any ideas of what might work? I'm not looking to pack the tank but I'd just like to have one or two (or a few if I can) bigger fish in the tank instead of high numbers of bitty fish. If all else fails I'm willing to keep the ten as is and find someplace to put it (good luck there).
 
An angel or two? Maybe some rainbow fish? German blue or gold Rams? Possibilities are endless! You don't want TOO big of a fish, 29 is still pretty small, but you can get a couple good mid-sized fish in there that will be fine with the cories and danios.


I have a 20 gal tall with 6 danios, 1 gold angel, 1 bolivian ram, 2 kribensis, 4 pepper cory cats, and 1 clown loach. They all get along perfectly well, and the tank is heavily planted. The angel and ram bicker sometimes... and the kribs gaurd thier fry... but other than that no one bothers anyone else.
 
I would stay clear of the clown loach (due to their preference for a school) but what about yoyoloaches. A single RTBS might be nice (give it a cave). Gouramis can be really nice in a planted tank. A couple of SAE get on the medium big size. The rams might be nice as well.
 
I really like gouramies as well. I know you said you don't want smaller fish but there are many that would look really nice, like tetras, platies or more danios. For somewhat larger fish there are many nice barbs and rainbowfish (dwarf neon especially) that would be nice looking and give you a very active tank.

I'm not sure about the red tailed black shark. They are very territorial and might not like sharing the bottom with the cories. You get kuhli loaches (snake-like) or more cories and they would probably do better.
 
The RTBS does fine as long as the other fish do not look like it, SAE, CAE, Flying Fox, etc... IME they do fine together so long as the RTBS has a place to call his own.

I didn't realize that you can keep a breeding pair of kribs and other peaceful species in the same 20g tank! I would have thought they would get beaten up pretty badly by the kribs?

Your krib leaves angel and ram alone?
 
I'd say get more danios so you have a nice school of 10. 4 is too little! I'll tell you what I'm going to do for my 30 so you have an idea.

10 z. danios
4 pineapple swordtails
1 gourami
3 jullii corydoras or if I can't find them some yo-yo loaches.

Yashinfan, I'm so surprised to see you recommend danios :p Actually, its likely I'll get a couple more of them (maybe two or three tops) so they have a little more company.

I really like the idea of getting a RTBS for the tank. the only thing I worry about is the pygmys. These guys are really pretty small and will only ever grow to about an inch. Will the RTBS see them as a meal? I would plan to put in plenty of hiding spots since the pygmys seem to enjoy them as well.

How does this mix look:

6 Danios
6 Pygmy Corys
1 RTBS
3 Ottos

Will the ottos work here? I'm looking for something to help with the algae.
 
My brother had no problems with his RTBS and his cories (his were 1.5 inches but I don't which kind). The RTBS should eat them if he is getting fed well. His cherry barb (before it got friends) constantly picked on the RTBS who never fought back. So it might be the personality. You could end up with a mean RTBS or a calm one.

I have never had ottos but I hear they are great as long as you can get ahold of healthy ones, which isn't always easy. Plus they only eat brown algae.

SAE are the best algae eaters out there (but I have never had them so this is all what I have read). But they do not get along with the RTBS (similar shape) so you couldn't have both. SAE, though, do well in groups.

yes my kribs get along pretty well with everyone else. They've been in there for about a year and a half, at least, and I've never seen any damage to any of my other fish.

My tank is heavily planted so that probebly helps a lot, they have lots of hiding places to protect thier fry. They'll chase anyone away that comes to close, even the cories, but never actually hurt them.

The angel and ram chase each other more than the kribs chase anyone.

When the kribs aren't spawning then they are perfectly peaceful. :D
