Hmmm...don't think I would try killis with betta. Most people keep them in species only tanks although mine are in community tanks mostly. They are not often found in shops, the best ways to get them are mail order and clubs :)

The Endler's are very gentle. I've had them with a betta and with dwarf gouramis in another tank with no problems. The betta might occasionally eat a baby, but they are so prolific that it wn't matter.

Watch out who you put killies in with

I put my Aphy. gardneri in at first with some guppies in a 5 when I first got them, after the male got acculmated he chewed all the tails off the guppies. I now have a trio (mom, dad, and a daughter) in the 5 gallon hex by themselves with some java moss. They are very pretty though and often this is the tank visitors come look at (they also breed well). There are some more peaceful killies from what I heard, so do your research! IMHO they are very beautiful though. (The person I got them from after I told him they ate my guppies said they can't stand anybody prettier then they are). Maybe you could also check out some peacock gudgeons? They can take cooler temp water too. In my office I have a couple of bowls with bettas and a 2 gallon with wild guppie/endler crosses.

Oh, I got my killies from

Aquabid from a seller sportsfn. The local fish store does carry them on occation but not often and they often charge high prices. It seems you can get some exotic types on auction.

Yeah, Aquabid is a great place for killis. You can get eggs or fish, depending on how much shipping you want to pay vs effort of hatching. A couple of the sellers on there belong to Northwest Killis too, our regional killi club.

I just bought my aphyosemion australe the other day and added them to my 5 gallon which also houses 2 pygmy cories. I got a pair... with the male having gorgeous finnage. I am hoping to try adding a pair of northobranchius rachovii to this tank as well.... but it will be iffy as to if they will get along. Since they are such different species i am hoping it would work.

I would reccommend killis... they are lovely little exotic fish with impressive colours and patterns.

They thrive in small spaces... many not liking to be in anything over a 5 gallon. They breed like crazy too!

I have had good luck with putting tiger barbs in my established eclipse 6 gallon tank. I have 4 tiger barbs and 1 cherry barb in that tank now. Heaters are well worth the money. You can get an ebo jager heater for $15, which is one of the best heaters out there from www.bigalsonline.com

Gotta chime in with the Endler crowd on this one. Poecilia sp. Endler's are great little fish, and quite hardy. I've received them from Hawaii and Texas to Michigan 2 day shipping and 3 day shipping when the post office "lost" them with no deaths.
With one exception, in a 5, I would suggest ONLY males. Not because of aggression issues but because I went from 20 Endler's in a 20 long to about 80 in three tanks over the course of two months. Endler's Livebearers aka Endless Live bearers. ;)

Mine are all happily filling planted tanks. They all wander about the tank top, middle, and bottom. Low light plants as suggested with the flashy colors on the males would be beautiful. :)
