Ideas for making my own sump from tubs?

I used to use 50gal rubbermaids for my turtles, and until just recently I was using a 30gal tote for my sump for the 150. They work well, you just have to be sure to build frames or braces for them - they will crack long-term from the bowing if you don't.

Here are some pics of what I use, no baffles, just use filter socks. ATO, Refugium, and sump are all plastic containers, no bracing(although not a bad idea, if the container are filled more than half they do tend to bow out some) and have been using for over 2 yrs. Good luck

Lotsa unions there. I can feel the experience just looking at those nice pictures trippkid.

kcress It does make things easier to remove if neccessary. I know I should have cleaned up a bit back there, not too awfully bad, lots of wire clutter.

Nice setup, Tripp. I can emulate some of that plumbing in mine. Glad to see the bulkheads installed and holding on those plastic tanks. I'll bookmark this whole thread for later.
Thanks,
Tom

Thanks Tom, like I said I have had no issues with leaks or cracks(knock on wood). I don't use anything but clear(opaque) plastic for these as you can see, and the sump is pretty heavy duty plastic, the fuge would bow if not sandwiched between the wall and the sump, the ATO only bows when filled to the max(only normally do this when on vacation, other times it is about 3/4 full. As far as plastic leaching stuff into the water, if you are concerned about the container, you could use EDPM rubber(the stuff used for ponds) to line the container, it is safe to use. More than one way to get the job done on this topic. Good luck and let me know if I can help. I have a link to "compression baffles" I don't know if it is of use to you, works with a glass tank, let me know I can post it or send it to you.

Hey Matt,
I've seen the compression baffles link and bought the special rubber gaskets awhile back. Haven't had the guts to use them yet, but now might be the time since I can't use silicone. Thanks for the good idea. I hadn't thought of it!
