I have had 4 different identifications for this fish, does someone really know what she is??? I have all ready looked at so many id galleries, I have not found one that looks like her, leading me to believe she is a hybrid.
Information: hubby bought her 4 years ago (Walmart-rescue), female, appx. 4 inches long. Note she has a small black fringe on her dorsal and a spot at the gill but no other black marks on her pect or anal fins.

Well your second fish is a maturing male Kenyi (Maylandia lombardoi). NOTORIOUSLY aggressive.

Does your first fish have blue in it or is that just the image quality making it look like it does?

The coloration looks like a yellow lab but the body shape does not.

PS- is this the one that was kept in the 5 gallon tank? Or am I mistaken? If it was then you can almost be certian it is deformed and will not look normal, even if it is not a hybrid.

As far as having blue- the gill spot which is a blackish-blue. There is a lighter bar across her face that is slightly irridecent (blueish purple). The quality of the picture isn't great (sorry). When she is laying eggs she really becomes a bright yellow orange with a purlpe irridecent sheen all over. She has some hints of very faint striping (horizontal).
- What about a Rusty Cichlid?
Yup, she was the one that was in a 5G. We have transferred her and she is sooo much happier. She has a lot of hidey holes now too, so of course I hardly see her and you were right, not nearly as angry. I am glad I came along in time to get her out.

If she does have the blue in her.... she looks like a Melanochromis johanii. Females are yellow but do often display dark barring and occationally get the blue tint of the male. I still think she's likely a hybrid though. I would not attempt to breed her or anything like that... ;)

breeding...

Oh G*d no! Not with the new one we have. They have established a truce, but looks like we are going to have to set up another tank.

Thank you for all your help. By the way, your site is really nice.
