Identifying plants?

i got these two species of plants for free, but i have no clue what they are?

The first one grows very fast with tiny leaves(4) on each segment of the plant, if i tear a piece off, it turns into a whole new plant

The second is slowish growing and reproduces by making new plants from the roots. kind of curves JUST a little.

1st is anacharis.. grows like a weed. Never really gets roots to grow in substrate.

2nd looks like some type of vallisneria (perhaps val nana)

Thanks so much, i was almost certain that the top one was anacharis, but not the bottom one. BK828 hit the right species i think. It looks almost exactly the same as photos on the internet... just not as bright, green, and generally healthy looking : /

The vals seem to have been in either a low light tank or a newly setup tank since its covered in brown algae.. You can try rubbing the leaves and if it comes off then within the next few water changes the vals should clear up and be nice and healthy

That's Tiger Val.
Look at the vein pattern.
In high light it will turn Gold and the veins will be look like stripes or blood vessels. Really cool!

Yeppers, those are vals of some sort, look really mis-treated too.

VERY mistreated... I got them for free. The owner had them without water and light for a week+

Im surprised they actually lived. Dead leaves all over them, had to trim, no scissors so I had to rip them off... bad for the plant im guessing.

Not to mention my first attempt at a planted tank, horrible lighting(around 30 watts I think), they live off of sunlight that comes into the window right next to them, supplemented by Jungle Plant Food Tabs

Not at all, I pinch or pull val leaves off all the time.
