If I wanted to paint the inside of my tank

what about plaster on the outside, aplyd with a spatula?, that would make it white, and algae resistiant.

what about putting a coat of black 100% silicon caulk on the back and side panes?

Sorry, use white silicon, not the black.

Plaster would quickly deteriorate as it rewets.

well i asked the user who posted his friend's tank, and apparently the tank doesn't have white walls. he said "No white walls, this was done with flash effect while shooting."

i have no idea how that was done with flash, but i'd still like to have a tank look like that.

I am not sure if this would work, just an idea. Maybe try it on a small sample piece of glass first.

Why not sand the outside of the tank that you want to paint, that will rough it up a bit and then paint it. It will still be smooth and easy to clean on the inside, but the paint should not look as glossy.

I am not sure if it will work or not...

one of the monsteraquaria sites is an aquatic photography forum... I read it from time to time. They would probably be more than happy to help figure out how to get that flash effect (just make sure you post with some sort of real name, the group is weird about that). My guess is that its a flash from above and behind, washing out whatever is behind the tank... of course if you want the effect to last more than 1/64 of a second you are back to the painting conundrum...

got another reply back. they used white card behind the tank. that's all it was. white card with flash.
i'll have to experiment with lighting. i'm thinking 6500k pure white light will do the trick. just have to find a suitable back and sides.

ThePBM, if you still want to coat the inside of the aquarium look into Epoxy Paint made for Marine or Pool use. It is only brush on, never spray. And you can mix it with silica sand or regular aquarium gravel to achieve an infinite number of unique finishes. It is in fact what people use to build plywood aquariums with. And.. oh yeah.. it is damned expensive. $60 - $80 a gallon or more. But you probably won't need too much for an aquarium. Do a google search for "pool paint" or "marine epoxy paint" for more info.
