.....Brussels Sprouts to your fish (plecos, otos, etc).....don't do it. I was recently re-introduced to eating Brussels Sprouts (B.S.) -- [thanks to Jennifer Love Hewitt's Shape issue - Oct 2009] and have actually started to enjoy B.S. So my brilliant brain decided that it might be nice to switch things up a bit and feed the Otos some unseasoned steamed B.S. instead of their usual cucumber/zucchini....after 24 hours *huba huba huba* I walked into the "fish room" to one of the most atrocious stenches I have smelled in a long time. Not only did the submerged B.S. stink up the entire room, it clouded up the water pretty bad. Needless to say, I trashed the B.S. and I immediately did a 80% water change and at last, things are back to norm.

I just wanted to give creative minds the heads up - Brussels Sprout plus tank equals trés mal/muy malo! :)

Does anyone else have any unusual or special feeds that you would recommend or warn against? Please share.:grinyes:

P.S. the snails loved the B.S!
 
Sounds like a bunch of B.S. to me.
 
Ah yes, the "cruciform vegetables" in the cabbage family. DO NOT WANT! (in your tank) Although I enjoy them all personally...cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli and Brussels sprouts are all vegetables I like eating, but don't have very often. Precisely because boiling them makes for a stinky kitchen! :dive:
 
I've fed brussel sprouts to my fish before and I had no problems. I didn't notice any smells coming from my tank and it didn't cloud up my water at all.

I just looked over your stock list in your signature -- could you please share which of those fish ate the brussels sprouts? I have a herd of Otos that aggressively eat most vegetables and they did not even touch the B.S. How did you fix them prior to adding them to your tank (raw, steamed, frozen, etc) and do you keep a heater in your tank? If yes, or no, what temperature do you keep your tank?

I'm not doubting your experience but the things the brussels sprouts did to that tank water and that room was terrible. I keep my tanks at 79-84 F and the combination of those temps and steamed B.S. was oh my gosh, it was very bad. I had to open the windows in the room to aerate the smell despite it being 25 degrees outside. :crazy:
 
Well when I fed the fish brussel sprouts I had 2 ottos in my ten gallon with a few snails. I also gave a brussel sprout to my clown pleco in my larger tank. My tanks are usually kept at about 78 to 80 degress.

Sry...couldn't resist. I've heard that brussel sprouts were a good source veggie but have not tried it myself. I'll just stick with the zucs.
 
I don't know much about feeding Brussels Sprouts to fish, but wouldn't it make them gassy and not really be good for them? I just know that it's one of the no-no foods for rabbits because of the gas.

BTW I boil mine and I have never smelled anything so I am confused there as well. They are one of our favorite veggies here!
 
I think you can boil them without it smelling too much, but if you are the kind of person who tends to leave things (such as myself ;)) the water will smell bad. I don't usually wash the dishes immediately after eating...I often times put it off until just before bed because I hate washing dishes! No dishwasher in my household, or room for one in the "starter house" kitchen.

Birds Eye makes these singles packs of microwaveable veggies, I believe 4 to a pack. I eat them, and I always try to save some for the fish. They have B.S. (lol), corn, green beans, sweet peas...I've tried feeding all these to the fish. Wouldn't recommend the first two, really.
