however, the stand rocks ever so slightly...the guy at petco said that once i fill my tank with everything, it will settle the stand. was he totally bull!@#$ing me?

Sometimes they warp slightly so they rock. Putting weight on it will 'unwarp' it and get it nice and flat.

hardwood floors

Just a tip on the hardwood floor scenerio. I have 40 year old, tongue-in-groove hardwood floors that started buckling when water got underneath. I had a slight problem with a snail getting in a hose, and overflowed about 2 gallons. The floor is now ruined and dropped the value of the house. If I had it to do over, I'd buy something to put under the stand to catch the water. I now have a rubber backed rug that will absorb a good bit of water.

Good luck with your project.

I'm worrying about that too...

What kind of guard did you have on it?

I'm just using a large rug with a rubber backing that will hopefully absorb alot of the water in the cotton threads until I can get the water up. If I have a big spill, it's all over anyway. I haven't seen anything with edging (a lip) to prevent spills from getting out that is large enough to cover the space. If you really want to be sure, I'd build something. I already ruined mine, so we'll just have to replace the floor before selling.

I have a 31" chest of drawers that I plan on putting a 20-gallon long on. The piece doesn't make a sound when I sit on it (I weight much more than a full 20 gallon :p: ). I'm actually going to retrofit the thing to add more support where the aquarium will need it. It will want to bow in the middle, so I am using 4x1" dowels at the very front, back, and inbetween to completely support the top. At every facal piece (the pieces on the front that hold the sides together) I am adding L brackets. My grandfather thought that it would be alright this way (he has been doing construction for 20 years, and he was a farmer for 60 years before that) so I am taking his word for it.

Not sure why you'd have to spend $300 on a stand for a 55gal. I got an oak laminate stand at Petco for under $100 (brand new, not scratch-and-dent).

For aquarium furniture/equipment, the big chains (PetSmart, Petco, etc.) are likely to be better deals than an LFS.
