I'm getting a 30gal. tank...

yea... but someone told me it's each inch the fish is is 1 gallon? like, for example, an Oscar, which can grow to be 12in., wouldn't it need at least a 15gal.?

Not really. Throw that rule out the window, as you have fish that are too deep-bodied to be counted the same as skinny Neon Tetras.

They need at least enough room to turn around...Os and Goldies will eventually become unable to turn around in such small quarters...

what's the minimum (in your opinion) for a Red Oscar?

Minimum, 75 gallons, but you can taper that down a little bit for a larger tank and more than one...50-60/Oscar in larger tanks but a 75 is the smallest tank that I'd use for one.

aw... is there such thing as a non-aggressive Oscar? my friend told me about them...

It's not aggression that you have to worry about so much as the deterioration of water quality...if they reach 12", they'll do a lot of waste excreting, and larger tanks stave off water changes.

There are some territoriality issues...especially if you have four in a 200 and two pair off...

I can't think of any strains of Os that are less aggressive than any others.

If you want africans, you could probably have yellow labs, shellies, dwarf julidochromis like a transcriptus, kribs i think are african too. If you wanted something with a lot of personality i would go with the shellies. I have a 20 gallon tnak that i am going to put a dwarf pike cichlid in, crenicichla compressiceps. You could also get a pair of firemouths. A 30 will would be too small for an oscar or a midas. Both need a minumum of 55 gallons, but 75 is what they should be in if you can get bigger then a 55.

well... ok. I dont want unhappy Oscars. I love my oscar in my 200gal. named Oscar. Lol! He's 1 of my Red Oscars... :D what do firemouths look like? Or, does anyone know where I can buy a 50-75gal. for a resonable price?
