this is probably the dumbest post, but im having a hard time picking out a schooling fish for my 29g planted.
so far i have a betta, 4 otto's, 2 cory cats and a spotted pleco. id like to add a species of schooling fish, around 8-12 depending on the species adult size.
i was gonna go with a dozen neons but then i kept reading how they dont last anymore with over breeding n' such, so they were out. then i moved on to cardinals which NO one sells :(
then i moved on to a school of diamond tetras but then i read they nibble plants, as do cherry barbs, and serpae tetras can nip my betta.
then i moved on to harlquin rasboras, but to be honest looking at them in the petshop tank they looked like roaches..yes i am weird but something about that brown with the black thing...:lipssealedsmilie:
so now what? lol
is there any pretty schooling fish that is totally plant safe and betta safe and easy to find in petshops?
im like at a stand still :(

here is the tank

I'd get a couple more cories, for sure. They are so much happier in groups. For the schoolers, maybe some glowlight tetras? They don't bother plants or tankmates, and are pretty.

Ember Tetras, Emperor Tetras, Lemon Tetras

I vote for embers... they're awesome!!!

BTW, love your avatar. I have a black chihuahua too :)

those ember tetras or gorgeous, but never seen them sold :(
ive had lemon tetras before, they were nice, dang i think i had them for like 4 years before the croaked
glowlights are a good choice, i think i may be able to find them :)

i was gunna say harleqins, but now i wont....
a school of green neons is my suggestion.

also, if you cannot get something local....ask your local fish shop to get it for you...if it is a good shop they will get it for you. whenever i want something strange and dont want to pay shipping i simply go ask my LFS for it and go back 6 days later and get it.

I've had harleqins before. They were good fish. Yes, the lacked in color for the first few months, but soon after they colored up to red and black. I enjoyed them very much. They are good fish with little hassle and takes any kind of food.

But I do have embers now and I love them. They are not shy at all. I've got about 40-50 of them. Not sure how much cause I told the guy at the fish store just give me all of them. I took his word, he said they was like 40. But when adding them in I counted well over 40. Anyways they are awesome little fish. Even when they are so tiny I can hand feed them. I also have lampeyes. These guys are super cool looking and school a lot tighter than any other school fish I've kept.'

Hope this helps, this my personal opinion. What ever you decide to go with, just enjoy it.

Chonhzilla.

Galaxy Rasbora

Max out at less then 1"

Should be priced around $6 per fish

ok so now im torn between those embers and that galaxy rasbora.
i have only 5 petshops around me, petco and petmart which only get in the common stuff, then i have that pet place which you would think would get in hot stuff but they dont, then theres some crappy little store with empty tanks lol, last is az ponds which gets in rare fish but most of their tanks have ich :irked:
my tank may be schooling fish empty for awhile

i will look into the lampeyes, i think petsmart had them before
if i cant hold out i may end up with the roaches...oops i mean harlequins

heres my betta, he is quite happy, so i dont want to get a fish that will P him off :D
