Yeah, the guys from Wisconsin. Give him a break. The state is 90% white (I'm not exagerrating)...er caucasian (I've never referred to myself as caucasian). He was curious, he got his answer.

^I don't think that's fair to assume. I live in Wisconsin and at least in my city there is a huge amount of diversity.

As far as the original question. I know at my local LFS I see a lot of different people come in and buy fish. They may be mostly white but other races are common. I guess I never really thought about it before.

The fact that Wisconsin is 90% white is an undisputed fact. Check with the census bureau. Obviously, if you live in a city your going to have more diversity (thus making most rural areas even less diverse).

I'm willing to guess by the fact this guy asked this question and the general demographics of the state of Wisconsin that Tomah, WI (pop. 8,500) isn't exactly a budding center of diversity.

Such is life.
I commend the person for asking the question, it took courage, and a desire to know and learn. When one admits their ignorance they are no longer as opposed to those who desire not to rise above it by not acknowledging it!

Yes people of all cultures and races keep fish...even white people.

I wonder if white supremacists only keep white fish.

sometimes people just don't know. i grew up in a small town as well and there wasn't much diversity at all. we had native americans, most of whom lived down the highway on a reservation and caucasians. there was also a small handful of oriental people(not sure if they were chinese, japanese or whatever) and one very large family from pakistan that had like 11 kids. i did not learn more about other cultures until i grew up and moved away. I still live in a small city that doesn't have much diversity. there i times i feel i missed out by not being exposed to people from all around the globe and i still couldn't tell you what race most people are if you asked me, but i don't find it matters all that much so i never put any effort into figuring it out.

Oriental is for rugs and food, not people...

Sorry to bring back the negativity, but I couldn't not say anything. Imo, it is without question inherently racist, prejudicial, and tremendously ignorant to believe or think that one's own culture holds exclusivity to any action, hobby, belief system, way of thinking, etc... Ignorance is self afflicted, not learned, or ingrained, and as such, should not be used as an excuse for anything. I would also like to add that western civilizations were not even the first to keep fish in an ornamental capacity, and that the hobby in Asia is far more advanced than what we ever see in the US.

I think even if you grew up somewhere without much diversity, it just wasn't a good question.

Bluekrissyspike, you should avoid using the term "Oriental people" in the future. I'm sure you didn't mean to be, but it is considered a racist term by some.
