So I transferred my 2 holding females to a separate tank the other day and yesterday I noticed that there are a few fry swimming around. Does this mean the the mother has spit? Or is it possible that a few escaped and she is still holding more? I noticed one of the mothers lump under her mouth has pretty much gone, the other one is still holding for sure.

What should I do?

Will the fry survive do you think? Should I take her out of the tank and put her back in the main tank?

I put some food in to see if she'd eat and she didn't even flinch at the food right in front of her.

20 gallon with an aqua clear 20 filter and a 200 watt fluval heater set to 28

if u know one the females is not holding any fry for sure go ahead and take her out. I also once had 2 diff females holding in a 20g tank, but i also had other older fry in. The sooner u get the female back in origional tank, the better off they are so they wont be to harrassed.

Two water changes on a 20gal would be ok if you are a bit overstocked.. I do weekly water changes on my shellie setups which are 20gal longs but only have like 6 fish in each and i am fine.. The 200 watt heater may be a bit too much but just keep an eye on the temp range..

Yep i agree with vanpudin if the female has spit her fry and isn't taking them back in i would move her back.. she may be a tad bit stressed in the smaller setup probably why she spit in the first place..

ok thanks for the help! I put the non holding female back in the main tank as I saw she was being harassed by the other holding female. I've been watching her last night and today when I got home she is still kinda shy and not eating, but seems to be doing better than she was in the 20 gallon.

So far as I can see there are only 3 fry swimming around. What is the norm for fry count?

At first when younger but old enough to breed the brood is usually small anywhere between 5 to 15 fry as she matures and attains girth the broods begin to pick up in size to a point where she may produce 100 to 150 fry and as the cycle of life closes she will begin to reduce in number of viable fry..
