In grade 11 I had a physics teacher who was a major space geek. And he explained to us in simple terms that time travel could in a way happen because of this type of thing. It would be like time would continue on for some people while it would slow down for others, and to bring the groups of people together again it would be like time travel. He said it better but you know. He also explained that time travel is impossible by this method because as things move faster they get heavier, so in order for something to move fast enough it would become too heavy to move like that in the first place. That's what he said anyway. 
Yeah something like as your spead increases so does your mass. But that wouldn't matter in space, now would it? It's all about counteracting that inertia so you can stop.

Earth was sending an armada of ships to numerous planets all occupied by a race of aliens.
But because it takes so long, Earth time, to wait for those suckers to get there, we keep increasing our technology and sending out more ships.
But the new ships were faster. So even though the first wave of ships were sent out first, they were the last to arrive and attack the home world.

Ender's game was a great book. I remember in Speaker for the Dead, Ender was very old not because he lived a long time, but because he has traveled so much at close to light speeds that time outside passed by quickly.

Yeah speed always does increase your mass. In outer space or in earth's atmosphere.
But the more mass you have, the harder it is to increase or decrease your inertia. So to accelerate your ship from a very high speed to a stop (That's right, accelerate is a change in speed, not only to increase your speed. So when you slam on your brakes you are accelerating to a stop.) you need more power to do so.
