OK... so if you live on the Eastern Seaboard and hae gotten over your earthquake, you now must prepare for a hurricane. My question: How do most prep their tanks for power loss if they don't have battery powered pumps. I have 2 goldies in a 45 and two smaller ones in a 20gal. How long will they last without filter and airstone oxygenating the water? Can I manually stir/agitate the surface of the water? (I know I can... but would it help?)

last time i had a 3 day power outage I used a pitcher to scoop and pour back in.I put the hob filters in the tank water and every now and then i manually pumped my fluval 305 to keep that living. I also did a couple water changes

Wow. Totally forgot about the filters.... You can't submerse HOBs can you?? Or did you mean the media?

Battery powered air pumps FTW. I dont know where they sell them near you, but if you can find them soon - they will work wonders for keeping air moving. You can hook up the little filter things they sell for air pumps and that will filter a little bit too, not a whole lot - but something is better than nothing.

def ftw. then you can use a water bottle, a tube, and your filter media to rig up a little filter. i read on a site that gave insane directions to fill up 55 gal drums with water in case a waterline breaks/becomes contaminated

I have a power pack and works great for my fishy stuff , HOBs and air pumps have low power consumption so the power pack well last for long time

check out this

and this one is probably the best and price is good

this unit can run one Amp or power for 28 hours

so lets say you got a aquaclear 70 HOB it uses 6 watts of power and thats 0.05 amp/H

lights and heaters well draw more power

light thats 39 watts well be 0.325 Amp/H

100 Watt heater well be 0.833 Amp/H

so in total if thats your setup you well have 1.208 Amp/H and that power pack should last up to 23 hours

I also have a Generator and live on the east coast just a little more north

I have a generator. I live in MD west of Baltimore so I am not expecting a power outage. But you never know! I am going to have 20 plus gallons of gas ready to go.

go buy a few batteries and a inverter. that can keep a air pump going.

with zero power take out the media and float it in the tank. the key is surface agitation. splashing the top of the water can help get o2 in the water. the other is heat. cover in blankets or foam as well to keep the heat in the water.

Commence the building of a bicycle powered generator.
