In Need Of Serious Help

before i go the cichlids i was just doing around 20% once a week. but after my first batch of cichlids died, i prob did over a 50% water change, i even did a 20% water change while i was floating the new cichlids in the tank to adjust to the water temp.

could also be bad stock from the store
could have been the bleach
could have been a large change in Ph store to your tank.

good water changes help a lot so keep them up keep testing also. I can't really see anything really wrong other then the above that could have caused the deaths

ill keep on doing water chagnes every day....just soo scared to buy more expsensive cichlids to see them die not even 24 hours later. thanks for the advise

When cycling a tank 'fishless' it is not reccommended to do lots of water changes. You need to give the chemicals a chance to work themselves out. The fact that you are showing nitrite shows that your cycle is not complete. I would continue to add the same amount of ammonia as you did at the begining. (unless you still have living fish???). You need to continue to add the same amount of ammonia throughout the cycle until you start reading nitrates. THEN you are safe to add fish.

If you still have a living fish i would just keep the one for now, doing small 10% water changes every few days until you start reading nirtrate and the nitrite is all gone. Then add one or two more fish at a time. Never more than that or else there will be too much ammonia for the bacteria to handle and you will start reading ammonia and nitrite again in your tests (basically you go through a mini-cycle)

ask the pet store if you can borrow a sack of thier gravel to put in your filter and help establish the tank.

the bleached rocks might be the problem as well. i would take them out and soak them over and over again in hot water, at least 3 times. i dont know if just letting them air dry would help because holey rock has lots of little holes where bleach could have gotten into.

im not showing any nitirite levels. so i know my tank is fully cycled. ill remove the rocks after work and soak them in more hot water. hopefully after a few water changes, the problem will be resolved....
