If you are starting from scratch by doing a fish-in cycle properly, you should never see ammonia or nitrite with your liquid test kit.

You keep doing your frequent water changes and a month or three down the road you should see some measurable nitrates.

I did a fish in cycle & with frequent water changes I did see low levels of ammonia but never let the level get past .25 then saw nitrite & then lastly nitrate cycling my 36 gallon years ago. I used API liquid tester drops it took approx 8-9 weeks to cycle my tank. Then got appropriate readings when cycled 0 ammonia 0 nitrite 5-10 nitrate
