Is there any macro algae I can put in my fowlr display that looks nice but will help keep nitrates down? I have cheato in my nano in a fuge but not sure how it would look in my display tank. Is there any way I can hide it? I'm going to be painting the back of the tank black and was thinking may be some sort of hang on box that could be inside the tank drilled with a few holes made from black acrylic so you cant see the algae.

ooo, I already have one of those from my fw tank. Will clean it all up and see what it looks like and whether I can disguise it!

You can also plant some C. Prolifera in your sand bed. Great looking stuff and usually doesn't go sexual like so many other macros.

Do you have any tangs, crabs or sharp nose puffer? They will all eat it if you do! Mine do. = )

I used one of those 3 dollar hang on the tank clear plastic boxes that the LFS uses to catch fish and pour them into a bag. I drilled holes in three sides and hung it under the overflow of my protien skimmer to give the cheato some flow in the box. Works great. I have a black background...I think it blends well enough that I'm not worried about disguising it.

Also Halimeda works well in tanks and grows slowly. Xenia I hear is also supposed to help with trates if that is the reason you are wanting macro.

I second the C. Prolifera. I wouldn't put anything in my DT (just me) becuase the macros can be so invasive as well as the potential to go sexual and foul the water. I keep prolifera in my fuge and really like it. Many fish will like to 'wade' through it for cover and others like tangs will just eat it up.

I have someone making me a black acrylic box with holes drilled in an suckers to stick to the back of the tank, gonna just fill it with cheato as that has kept the nitrates 0 in my nano tank, box is going to 12" long, 2" gap and 5" down, big enough to hold a decent amount I'd say

Sounds great! There are also "shave brush trees" that are cute and don't spread. I've seen some beautiful maroon colored plants but don't know what they are called...I'll see if I can find them.
