Indian Almond Leaves

shrimp love leaves, either oak, maple, or almond. THey graze on the infusoria which grows on them. I use leaves in all my shrimp tanks.

I've been looking for more info about indian almond leaves because everyone mentions how great they are for bettas (and I want my betta to be happy!).

The most technical article I could find is here:

... But I was wondering about filtration when I use leaves/extract. I've seen purigen clear the water of tannins, but is it also removing all the potential benefits? Should I take the purigen out of the filter?

I like alder cones for their potency but did a few tannin comparisons and maple leaves were the prettiest color. Oak leaves didn't do anything at all. Alder cones made the water more of a yellow whereas maple stains it to more of a rosy hue. Especially the little decorative japanese maples.
