I Received 9 small hermits yesterday in the mail. They were sent in a bag without water (is this how their normally sent?) Today they are very inactive. Are they nocturnal? Do they always come out of their shells when they die? I can't tell if some of them are dead or alive.:help:

pic it up and smell it. You will know if its dead or not.....trust me..

Should not be in water unless if only for a couple seconds.

No they don't always come out of their shell, but they do come out to molt, could that be possible??

They are salt water hermits, not land hermits. Molting is a possibility. I have watched them and they are more active at night, I know this is normal for land hermits but is that the norm for marine hermits? I have seen a small spike in my nitrates. prior to adding them everything was at 0 and now nitrates are at 20. I'm wondering if I had so many die because they were sent without water- I originally ordered 15 and ended up with nine alive and now fewer. I guess time will tell. Thanks for the help.

I bought some blue-leg hermits from saltwater.com and they came with a bit of water in the bag, though I don't recall how much, I don't believe it was full but there was water.

the two lots of hermits that i have received, one was held in a water bag, the other shipment was just wrapped in wet tissue in a zip lock bag, all survived from both shipments...they dont have to have water for transporting, they need moisture though...they can actually live outside of water for a good few days before needing to get wet again...

I have a ball of chaeto in my display in the back upper left corner. The top of this is always a little out of the water and my red legged hermits live right on top of it. The tops of their shells will be bone dry but they are happy to hang out there. If I move them they go straight back. My blue-legged ones do not care about this place at all. Hermit segregation is occuring I guess. :headshake2:
