They eat feeders, and their agression can vary dramatically from fish to fish.
Have you considered a blue dempsey? Not as robust, need VERY clean water, but nice colors (blue) and are better for a community tank.

Also, some say the BD is a hybrid. I choose to believe they are not.

i think im gonna move the gouramis and just make it a dempsey tank, and possibly a pleco..

For a 55, I would stick with no more than 2 JD. You absolutely MUST have space for them to establish a territory of their own. I think Id even pass on the pleco as you don't want the pleco barging in on them, not to mention the fact that a common pleco is just kinda blah and boring.

Yes, I think 55g would be a minimum requirement for 2 JD's.
