Are you supposed to be able to see infusoria with the bare eye? Because I keep seeing this guy's auctions that say that you're bidding on visible infusoria.

And if you can't see them, how do you know if you have them??

They will cloud the water they're cultured in. An individual is like a dust particle in size so it might be hard for some folks to pick out individuals, but the cloudiness caused by billions of them is readily apparent. I agree with Jetajockey's assessment of the value of buying cultures, but I have a different way of culturing them which I believe I already explained to you in a recent thread.

What? The apple snail way? I can't remember.

I also read you can use a radish, lettuce, algae tablets, etc.

I have a 2 liter bottle of pond water that I put a leaf in. I need to hit it with some dog food/radish or something. Last time I tried making a culture with lettuce and an algae tablet, it got moldy and stunk.

How long do cultures live for? I want to keep some always on hand for fry.

I put waste water from changes in a 5 gal bucket along with plant trimmings, dead leaves, etc. and put it in a sunny place outside. You'll want to screen it to keep skeeters out unless you plan to collect egg rafts daily. You'll have a mixed greenwater/infusoria culture in a few days.

Yay! I see bunches of tiny things swimming in my culture. I just put a radish in.

I can't say I've ever seen them in water I've left laying around in the house or outside, and I do have a habit of leaving things lying around.

SubRosa, is there anything you don't know?!

The sun hasn't been shinning much here in Michigan lately...any other ideas?

I'm not getting the "spontaneous creation" of green water or infusoria. Everything I put in windowsills and outside molders and starts to stink. The only one with infusoria was the one I collected at the pond and that culture is diminishing. I have to set up another one... But I dunno the point if I can't get green water. I even tried putting some fertilizers in my water and still nadda.
