Injured fins on Arowana

Poor guy. You definitely need to do a lot more water changes. Arowanas really demand high water quality and 1 water change per 3 weeks is definitely not going to cut it, especially not in a 55. The faster you can upgrade the better too. I myself am getting a 240/300 in september. At 8 inches you really dont have too much time left, especially when the fins are deteriorating like this.

Also its not the food. My aro is on a strict hikari pellet diet. Ive been feeding him hikari cichlid gold and hikari cichlid bio-gold+, no problems. A few vendors at Monster Fish keepers also feed their aros strictly pellets when young. So it's definitely not the food.

I unfortunately am no expert when it comes to treating disease and stuff like this as I learned to prevent everything with frequent water changes. I would also advise you to post this in the Arowana subforum of Monster Fish Keepers as there are many more experienced aro keepers there. From my point of view though, this looks like its caused by deteriorating water quality. Unless your PH is 6.4 out of the tap, then this is most likely the cause.

Someone recently had a problem similar to this with his silver so maybe you can find something. Best of luck to you and your fish.

Hey you are in the same boat i am with a tank. I am figuring a 300 also. Should be soon, i hope. He is growing a lot faster than i expected, thats ok though gives me a excuse to upgrade faster :)

I appreciate your information about the water quality. I will get a better water test kit and i will keep an eye on it. There is not fungus or infection so i think if i can get the water set, it should heal. He has not gotten worse at all in the past month, its just been like that.

It took some work to get him on the pellets but he finally gave in. thats right i showed who was boss. He showed my mom who was boss when he bit her finger yesterday.. boy was that priceless to hear on the phone. lol

ok turned up the heat, added melafix, stress coat, and salt was yesterday.

hopefully this will all help. Thanks guys

Not exactly the same boat, my tank has an extra 6'' of width, which is not a lot but it definitely buys me more time. Also I'm for sure getting my upgrade in September as thats when the new hardwood flooring of my house will be done. Plus, I have kept an aro before and done at least a years research before getting my current one so I've had no surprises with this guy. The timing worked out perfectly with my upgrade. I've also been doing weekly water changes since I've gotten him and sometimes I even do 2 in the same week. ;)

Good luck with your silver and keep doing those water changes!

Btw silvers grow 1-1.5 inches per month so plan accordingly and upgrade as soon as you can. Also make sure your lids are properly weighted down, don't underestimate your aro's strength like I did. Good luck. :)
