injured raccoon

Well, we took the "patient" to a rehab center tonight and they HER in quarantine for a bit. No broken bones, so it comes down to either internal injuries from a vehicle or distemper. They will do more testing tomorrow.
Having been through rehab myself earlier this year, I was painting a picture for the kids of what to expect when we got there. Squirrels on little treadmills, a gecko on an exercise bike, rabbits jumping ropes...
I think they were a little disappointed not to actually see those things (:o ), but it was a neat place. They had several owls, hawks, squirrels, a 3 legged Opossum, and lots of critters in the basement (quarantine area)
The animals that can't be released are donated to zoos all over the world.

Ohhh, I'm soo glad you found a place for her to go! I'm glad some people still care enough to go through the "hassle" of all that! Yay for you:)

Hope she's okay. Let's hope it something like a fever and not rabies or a big internal problem (when our cat had his fever he was almost totally listless and limp).

She really is a cutie...but I'm partial to racoons anyway:)

*sigh* it's nice to see that people care enough to take care of our wildlife :)
I agree!

But, rabies is very dangerous. One thing to look for is 'foaming' around the mouth. Animals with rabies are mean and quick (at least in the early stages of the disease..). I'm glad you didn't get bit..

rabies is the first thing I thought of too, Joe. I'm not sure I would've been brave enough to pick him up.... it wouldn't have been a matter of how much I wanted to save it but my heart woulda broke for the little guy.... Jersey is full of cases of rabid raccoons biting kids or dogs, cats, whatever though, I most definitely would have called animal control to come pick him up..... especially since he was acting strange. But my hat's off to you snafu for jumping right up to the plate to make sure this little guy was in the best hands ;)

heh, well.....sorry to burst your bubble, but animal control would most likely have just shot him.

not in Jersey they wouldn't have. A few years ago some guy had to go to court because he was trapping squirrels or rats on his property.... they would remove it and quarantine it... after that, I'm not sure if they release them or place them in a sanctuary.... probably depending on the issue. But where snafu is from, I don't know....
