Injury questions OK here, too? Shubunkin with wing damage...

I'm so glad you found that article, Flaring. That looks exactly right and it fits in well with the fungal growth Jennie has already seen near the site of the injured pectoral fin.

Posts 5, 18 and 25 show the green bit. She has had it since I got her. I think 18 is the one with no fuzz over it, and there it looks like funny coloration rather than funk. It is currently trailing a big wad of something from the side of her head, so as soon as I get dressed (hey, I am on vacation...jammies are required!!) I will head off to the lfs AGAIN and see what I can find. I think I need to set up a tab there...

From the link you sent, Flarringshutter, it sounds like what she has, but looks more like white fuzz on a green thing rather than green fuzz. Will this med hurt her if she doesn't have saprolegnia?

Jen, that green bit still doesn't sound normal even if she's had it for a while. I would still treat with the malachite green. It won't hurt her if she doesn't have sap, and it will take care of whatever fungus it is that is growing on her operculum. Malachite green is very effective against all fungus. Best of luck! :)

Got a bottle of Quick Cure--only thing I could find with the malachite green in it. Dosage says 1 drop per gallon daily, max 3 daily treatments, effective in 48 hrs or less. Would you recommend one dose and wait, or plan on two or more? Gotta say, I am scared to drop more med bombs on the poor girl, but I want to see her better. Funny, my $5 goldfish is worth a small fortune all of a sudden :)

Off to do a water change, filter change, and then nuke the green stuff (making trumpet noises) wish me luck!

i shall keep my 'finners' crossed for both Indy and your sanity, lol.

i might start out the first day with one dose as per directions, directly following a large volume water change (i would say at least 75%). observe, and if 24 hours has passed with no improvement, dose again after another large volume water change. if no improvement after second dose, nearing the end of the second day, then you may have to re-evaluate dosing and water change schedules.

when i had bettas i used a med on occasion that had both malachite green and methylyne blue in it, and oh boy, does it stain stuff! lol. i still have 'smurfy' suction cups.......

the treatment of 1-3 days is for ich,.. i 've looked the link i posted says thet even with other infections could be up to 10 days,..
i was trying to treat for gill parasites so i went for 10 days,.. jsut in case,.. you'll have to get an idea on how many days from tohers,. even the quick cure website dosent state a time,.. the statement is for ick though, just for your info,..
and directions say 2 days then a waterchange before another days dose,..

very careful don't get skin in contact with that , and if draining put it into septicsystem,. without trying to touch anything you eat, like kitchen sink i drainded hose all the way down sink and not toughing the inside of sink,.. very nasty stuff,.

^Malachite green is relatively non-toxic compared to the formalin in the mix. Formalin = Formaldehyde, the stuff that they used to use to preserve those frogs and rats you might have dissected in biology in high school. It's pretty toxic so be careful.

The malachite green is relatively benign in comparison. It is still toxic but not as dangerous. It started out as a dye for cloth. You can buy it in it's pure form relatively cheaply from laboratory suppliers. Runs about $30 for 25 grams. 1 gram is enough to treat 1000 gallons of water which is why it is used so extensively in aquaria. Cheap and effective.

As I mentioned here a zillion years ago--or has it only been a week?--I have to do daily large water changes as I had no used filter media to cycle the tank, and now have TWO pooping pigs in my little hospital tank. Do I need to do anything different with my dosing because of this? I did the original 1 drop/gal of Quick Cure right after a large water change this afternoon. Everyone seems fine, swimming actively, begging for more food everytime I walk by (they sure figured THAT one out quick!) Tomorrow I will need to do another water change...medicate as I did originally? And for how long? Till I see no more funk? Package says three days max. If it is still there, do I wait a day or two and nuke again? As Dixienut mentioned, the website says it can take ten days...but three days maximum treatment? I am a little confused, and after possibly bombing them with the last med, I want to be sure I have a plan BEFORE I cause a problem. And I am assuming I need to dispose of the medicated water differently than the 'straight' water? I had been dumping the just dirty water in my potted plants. Can I dump it down the drain ( in the laundry room, not the kitchen)?

You guys with tanks in the house, I don't know how you do it. I have hauled more buckets of water than Cinderella this last week, scooped more poo, fussed and fretted and...I think I need to take up drinking :) lotta, LOTTA drinking!!

Going to bed...

just make sure when you start up that lotsa lotsa drinking you don't accidentally grab the Prime bottle when you're reaching for your glass of sanity, hahahahaha!

i would think fresh water and fresh meds daily is the best course of action. you might even consider bumping up your water changes to twice daily, since you have two beggar poop machines in the hospital tub now.
