Hello, Ive had fresh water aquariums for the past 2 years now, right now i have piranhas in my freshwater tank (40 g) , im transfering them to my new 80 g tank. With my 40 gallon i was thinking of doing salt water, is 40 gallon a decent size for a saltwater tank? what kind of things would i need to buy in addition of what it takes for my old freshwater tank to run properly. I think id like to put some live rock and smaller fish like clownfishes.

Thanks. Don.

You will need strong lighting if you decide for corals, and probably a protein skimmer, although I don't use one on my 10 gal. (but I do have asurface skimmer connected to a nano power filter). A tank as small as mine is fine with the FW power filter I used with FW. If you limit yourself to fish and LR the lights you have are probably ok. For corals you will need stronger lights of the correct spectrum. You will also need water testing kits for Ph, Kh, Alkalinity, and NO2/NO3 as a minimum, a hydrometer to measure salinity, heater and thermometer (the same you have now). You will end up getting other stuff later, like R/O unit for purer water, other test kits, etc. You can also add a refugium, moonlight, timers, powerhead(s) for water movement (to keep corals), and many more things. You will catch on. I'm still learning new stuff every day myself.
