Inspired You?

whew sounds like a lot of work with those sharks and thesis' and whatnot. good luck with those babies!

closest aquarium to me is the New York Aquarium in Brooklyn, seems like a nice place, only been there twice though and they were a while back. hopefully i'll be able to work there in the future, but as any senior in hs, im still unsure with the path i will eventually take, although i am very interested in aquatic biology.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with that! I took a 3-year hiatus from college after my 3rd year to figure out what I wanted to do. I was deciding whether I should try to go into music professionally full-time (I was already moonlighting) or stick with biology. The fish won, and I don't regret my decision at all, either to continue on my original path or to take the break. The more perspectives you have, and the more things you try, the better chance you have of knowing what you want. How do you know you really like something if you've never known anything else? I'm more sure now that I want fish and marine bio to be my life than I ever was as a kid :)

I'm probably going to write threads about this in General Chit Chat, so look our for that soon! We can definitely continue our discussion there.

Sorry to divert the thread.

im decidin whether to pursue a career in music or try my hand at opening a lfs store at the moment

depending on what college i go to, i'll probably stick to core classes the first year or two and then decide on a major.

from what i hear, LFS's don't make too much money (after you pay the workers, outrageous utility bills, rent, manage dead losses, annoying customers, etc) but i guess if your really good at it (and you get the right employees), it won't be too hard to manage and people will keep coming. all i can say it, stick to a LFS and not a LPS! they have a lot more to deal with.

It was the past early july when a couple of buddies and i went to a walmart to buy some bettas to have a betta battle, and we saw some girls that we know there and they bought bettas aswell and we all went to my friends garage to battle the male bettas. i bought a little betta tank that was about 1 quart in size and we put 3 or 4 in at a time to watch them fight. and of course they did nothing. so we were a little dissapointed and took our fish home. I kept my betta (Glen) in his little tank and then got a 10 gal from my friend who had another 10 gal goldfish tank. later on we tried to fight each others bettas and they fought like crazy in a 10 gal and Glen eventually won because terry died a week later from a torn gill plate and open wounds. i have learned alot since then and now have 3 tanks (10 gal, 20 gal, 55 gal and soon to get a 75 gal). Glen currently resides in the 55 gal community tank and wont be fighting again because its inhumane. And as far as i know the girls still have their bettas alive.

Although I love going to public aquariums - I visited the Monterey Bay Aquarium not too long ago - I always thought that keeping fish was boring. This all changed when the daughter of my best friends decided to get an aquarium. We all lived through her dramas, and I had to take care of her fish when she went on a trip to Europe with her parents. The last step was when, one day, she decided to share some of her gazillion guppies with me. Suddenly, I found myself with a ten gallon hex aquarium and ten guppies. She wanted to give me more, because this brought her ten gallon only down to 50 guppies, three neon tetras, 2 clown loaches, a common pleco and about 100 snails, but I could avert further gifts of this kind.

Somehow, those 10 guppies managed to survive through the cycling of the tank, and now I find myself with an acute case of MTS :D. And I discovered that even small fish like guppies are anything but boring. I guess I'm hooked ;).

Just terrible. For shame.

oh, you're a terrible person! Just kidding :D

I did the same thing when I was a kid. In Taiwan, we bought a couple male bettas and put two in a large soup bowl to see them fight. Of course, they were too stressed out and just sat there. All my male relatives gathered around and probably wanted to bet on it, too! Ah, the Pacific Rim.

he was a dumb kid. also read the part where he said he's learned a lot since then and has grown up, and he would never do that again because it's cruel.
