What's with "Windows Messenger" that 'comes with' Windows XP??

Is it good???
The "Windows Messenger" that comes installed with Windows XP is a (relatively) pre-historic version (4.7, somebody correct me if I'm wrong) of the "MSN Messenger" which is used today. It uses the same network. IMO, if you want to use MSN, download it from messenger.msn.com, and use Add/Remove Programs (Add/Remove Windows Components) to remove the "Windows Messenger" (might as well nuke MSN Explorer while you're at it - I hate that thing!)

I use MSN Messenger 7 Beta primarily now - lots of new cool improvements in the new version. I USED Trillian for quite some time - but it was WAY too glitchy... If it wasn't crashing it was doing extremely weird stuff - one of my friends had his entire MSN contact list deleted by Trillian... hahah...

I'm suprised I haven't heard of GAIM, but looks and sounds great! However, since I am ONLY using MSN Messenger at the time there's not a heck of a lot of point in me switching messengers at this point.

Oh, a note on Messenger Plus!: It's a great addon to MSN Messenger, with GREAT features... Just make SURE that when you install it you DO NOT agree to the "sponsor software", as it is a bunch of spyware that's going to cause you problems! If you've heard anything about Messenger Plus! installing spyware even if you DON'T agree to the sponsor programs - don't believe it. I've thoroughly tested it myself. I use Plus! at work because of the "boss" feature (not that my boss particularly cares since he spends a good chunk of his day on MSN as well!)

lol

At any rate, if you just use one messenger service, getting the "standard messenger" for that service is likely the best idea, as it will fully support ALL features for that platform. However, if you find yourself using 2 or more IMs, then I would suggest Trillian or check out GAIM and see if you like it!

Of course, all of this is just IMO and YMMV. Cheers!

Thanks everybody!! Now I just need to decide which one I want.

Windows Messenger is a old system used to send messages across a network. It is not used for chatting and never has been. It is different than MSN Messanger and is almost only used to spam nowadays.

Actually, this isn't technically true. "Windows Messenger" which is installed by default with Windows XP IS an old version of today's "MSN Messenger" (Version 4.7 is installed with Windows)

What you are referring to is the Windows Messenger SERVICE, which is a service and not an application. All Windows XP users with SP1 or SP2 will find this disabled and as such do not need to worry about it.

Its unnecessary to limit yourself to just one; they are of minimal impact to a PC in terms of memory, space or cpu utilization.

I recommend using whichever your friends/family use.

I am starting to think this way. :)

When installing AOL IM pay attention to all the options during the installation.

By default it will:

-Change your homepage to netscape.com,
-Install the 'weather bug' application
-Add a tool bar to internet explorer.

All of these can be deselected during the install.

Most people just keep clicking next and end up installing a bunch of crap they don't want or need...

Just a heads up ;)

Great advice! I didn't like "Weather Bug" at all. I don't have AOL IM, and never will, but it's amazing about some downloads that put 'Junk' on your computer!

I use MSN now.. I used to use trillion, but it started to have complications... When i was chatting with other people that were using trillion as well, then it worked fine, but if I was chatting with someone who was using MSN or ICQ, it wouldn't send or receive all the messages....

A few times I've been chatting using msn, and when I message to a friend who uses trillion, they don't get the message... or vice versa. The problem totally went away when I uninstalled trillion and went back to msn...
