So, I found an ugly critter in my tank. Put it out there (to all of you) and the response was "leeches". I don't think so. Why? The critter did not die when salt was added to the mere tablespoon of water that I had the specimen in. It lived for days after. I did some research, and I think that I have come across a match with the description of the "worm". Has anybody out there had any experience with Camallanus.cotti? I have an awful feeling that is what I am dealing with here.

not likely Camallanus. I have dealt with this particular parasite on a few occassions and have finally eradicated it from my tanks(knock on wood)

internal parasites need a host to live..they feed of the digestive tract usually gorging themselves with blood.
if it is outside of the host it will die.

bear in mind these are small parasites as you can see. usually no more than 15 mm in length

Thank-you for the help here. I continue to try to positively indentify these things. My husband works at the University of Victoria that just happens to have an Aquatics lab. He is trying to connect with the student taking care of the lab over the summer. I am hoping that this student will take pity on me, accept samples, and maybe use the facilities to do an i.d. (Probably leeches, right?) Cross your fingers for me!
