Hello everyone, I'm a hardcore Marine Aquarium person and just started a 125 gallon freshwater tank. I have yet to find something that I want to place in the tank until I realized that Electric Eel are awesome. Keeping in mind that I love exotic and rare fish I would like to keep one. Does anyone know a place online where I can purchase one or what I should be weary of other then a 400 watt shock. Also info on tank setup would be helpful as well.

I already have about 6 saltwater aquariums and thought it would be nice to have at least one freshwater since I skipped over freshwater and started with saltwater first. So my question is entirely about freshwater now. I'm interested in keeping an electric eel.

sheesh, quiksliver, that's one hella fish!! 8 feet, 650 volts--good research. I like oddballs, but not that far! Jaybedriften, good luck!! Sounds like a lone fish in a huge tank!!! 
Unless said other fish are food. Either way, wether you want those fish to be food or not, they will be.
i would also not put your hands in the water at any time, as electric eels scare easily since they do not have the best of eyesight. and when they get scared, the zap things. when you do w/c, look for a gravel cleaner that keeps your hands completely out of the water and i suggest you wear rubber gloves for a bit more security

There also exists Electric catfish. I don't they're quite as big, less than 3 feet, I think. They're not quite as dangerous, they only have 250-350 volts in 'em.
I dunno, I saw an electric eel at an aquarium and they're pretty boring. They pretty ugly too. They just sit there, which is kinda good because they don't require ultra-huge aquariums since they're not active at all, they're actually very timid animals which are easily scared.
I always thought it would be cooler to have something along the lines of Baracudas, Parahna's, or Stingrays. They don't even get THAT big, so you don't need an abnormally large tank to house them.
