Introducing White Clouds

What do you think about adding an ice pack to cool temperatures on days when you don't do a water change? I'm going to have to do something like that to keep my tank under 74. During the warm snap it hovered around 78 even with pretty strong air conditioning (our living space is in in a converted attic).

I wouldn't worry about the temp getting up to 78F, that is fine for most fish and even white clouds. Just make sure there is plenty of surface aggitation and replace any evaporated water.

But if you want to keep the temp down or it does get even hotter adding an ice pack is doable, just make sure to add it to an external source such as a hang on back filter and place the ice pack in a sealed plastic bag or else it may contaminate your water.

Further investigation on the the temperature requirements for corydoras leads me to believe that I could probably drop the temperature of the tank a degree or two and still have an environment that suits the corydoras and the white clouds. It sort of makes sense too as corydras apreciate well oxygenated water. Of course I'm not suggesting that the temperature be dropped below 74F but I think this could work.

Look in your bucket every time you siphon the gravel too. You will almost surely find fry, at least some of the time (if the cories don't eat the eggs first). They really are great little fish, I have had them in a 20 with 480gph of filtration and they just loved the flow.

Watch out if you ever decide to put them outside or anything, they do well in cooler temperatures, but not too low. I recently lost all my white clouds this winter. In june (I think) of last year I moved them from their 20 gallon aquarium (which was too full at the time) into a 12 or 13 gallon "container pond" (sterelite storage container) on my coffee table. I soon decided that it was too small and bought them a 40ish gallon tub pond. I moved them into a room that doesn't seem to heat as well as the rest of the upstairs in our house, average temperature is about 58 - 60 in the winter. They did fine in this temperature, but one night it got really cold in the room, the temperature dropped way below 50, and they all died :(. I felt so bad, I had them for years and I loved watching them spawn and just swim around. They are fine down to about 55, but lower is no good. I've been thinking of getting some new white clouds lately, might go for about 9 and keep them in a 10 gallon by themselves. I've also been thinking of putting alot (40 or more) in my 77 gallon, with some cories on the bottom... that would be awesome.

A big school would be great.

Rollin, sorry to hear about your white clouds, that sucks. Yeah, 56F is generally listed as the lower limit. They are tough but not indestructable.

I have also seen a few web sites claim that the colour on white clouds starts to become washerd out in appearance at temperatures above 77F. Has anyone who has kept these fish also made this observation? Sorry for all these questions but the more research I do is the more various contentious points come up, and so far the best information (after reading much inconsistent or dubious information) has been on this forum.
