Introduction and help request possible SAPROLEGNIA (Fungus)

Thanks again everybody for your advice!
I am doing 50% water changes daily and have been keeping the Nitrates below 5.
I havent had any more casualties, but the 3 fish are still struggling. I have one isolated that seems to be getting better and the other two seem to be putting up a good fight. Hopefully they will all recover.

I will update after some more time passes and post pics of my tank setup once things settle down.

When you said hard and alkaline water does that mean the PH?? I add aquarium salt and keep the water temperature between 78-80.
Im going to look into the local water company about the water supply... and also I set some water out to have tested at my next IFS visit. my PH kit only goes up to 7 and I keep my tank PH above 7. I will prob get the test kit for high ph but they were sold out the last time I was there.

BTW... I found the 25ft python water changer for $40 at the kensfish.com website. I had to pay for shipping but it was well worth it because I bought other supplies at the same time and their prices seem to be very good. Many items were less that half the price I found at other places.

Today made me very sad as I lost my two fav fish.

i have been keeping up with daily 50% water changes and have lost 4 more fish and 1 fry in just 24 hrs.

I dont know if they are dying because the damage was already done... due to water quality... or something else that may be treatable. I feel like im just sitting here watching and waiting for them all to die.

anything else I can try please... i up for any suggestions.
 
ANy signs of the original fungus on them? Pics of it? What water conditioner are you using?
 
** OK, I think I may have found the big problem.... Camallanus worms :crazy: Just found them sticking out of a female platty. Any advice on best way to get rid of them? Prazipro?? Prohibit?? or something else?? :1zhelp:

No, there was no signs of fungus... so no pictures. In the future I will take some pics first before they die. I use declor, or api stress coat+, and add aquarium salt.
 
Just found my daddy lyre tail molly dead this morning, he looked fine but was isolating himself and hiding. No tank mates were chasing him at all so i knew something was wrong with him. he was eating up until last night, not as aggressively as before but still ate yesterday. I have his carcus in a specimen container to see if any worms expel themselves, but he looks normal with a slightly bloated tummy, but his tummy was fine last night when he was still alive.
 
I'm sorry that happened to you. I'm dealing with some scary stuff in my tank also and I'm fresh to the hobby. I really hope it works out. I have a LFS that keeps a decent amount of meds only a mile from me so I ask them questions about that kind of stuff. Maybe your LFS would know or have something there for treating it?

:iagree:I think the key to keeping a tank healthy is water changes and cleaning the substrate regularily. I do 50% water changes on all my tanks 2x a week no matter what, and if I am having trouble with a tank it is a 50% water change everyday. It is very important to keep the water qualtiy up to avoid things like fungus and bacterial infections. My favorite saying is that fish living in an aquarium is like you living in a sealed outhouse with a smoker. How often would you like someone to open the windows for you. You can avoid almost every problem by simply keeping up on large frequent water changes.

Plecos get very, very big. He will eventually outgrow your tank and need to be rehomed if he is not too big already. Plecos can grow up to a foot long if they are have the proper environment.

I hope you get everything staightened out with your tank. And those little wormy things are definatley a sign of overfeeding. I have had the unfortunate luck of developing them once. You can usually get rid of them by pyfoning the substrate everyday for a while and barely feeding for a while. I had luck getting rid of them that way. :girl:

Interesting to know that is from over feeding. I fed my fish twice a day for a long time. They ate voraciously and expect food every time I come to the tank. I figured it was ok but have cut back a bit anyway just because of the issues I'm having with my tank

As for the python, Im following your lead and just flushing it out, rolling the water out... it seems to be fine so far. I will prob clean it once in awhile with a bleach solution and rinse just to be safe. Thanks Rbishop and Stephcps.

I have some meds on the way... very expensive but i think its worth it to have piece of mind that everything will be ok.
Found a second fish with the butt worms and have those two in marina hang on box. I know they are all sharing water but hoping the the partial QT will help reduce the spread while i am waiting for the meds. The med I ordered is Levamisole and boy was it hard to find some. I spent countless hours trying to hunt it down but from my research everybody agrees that it works pretty well. Crossing my fingers...

Im keeping up with the water changes daily and feeding less too... it seems that my "solution to the pollution is dilution" as a wise AC member once said...lol, thanks SubRosa. I think of those words almost every day and keeps me motivated to do the water changes.

@Nepherael: I hope your tank get better too. I would follow the advice everybody is giving me about the water. Post #14 in this thread from Rbishop was helpful to keep me on track with getting the water things better. I started a thread in the forum for sickness regarding the Camallanus worms and got some very good advice there... maybe you can start asking about your problems there and somebody will help.
