Hello, I would like to say hello to all your fellow members. I have recently gotten my first freshwater fish tank and do have some questions that I really need answered in lamens terms. My long term goal is to educated myself enough to upgrade to a saltwater aquarium in the future.

With that said here goes....My fish tank is roughly six weeks old and doing pretty good. I do seem to have a problem with my alkalinity be around 8.4. Doesn't it need to be in the neighborhood of 5.0 - 7.0??? My fish are living fine, except that I am having trouble keeping my Neon Tetra alive. My water is also very hard where I live, but is that a problem?

Any advise from the fellow members would be greatly appreciated!!

History of Tank: Tank is 8 weeks old. I have 30 gallon tank with aqueon 30 filter. Heater. 2 Cherry Barbs, 1 Neon Tetras (purchased 7 and only 1 made it) I just purchase 4 of the see thru tetras (can't remember name) and put them in the tank today. done consistent 1/4 water changes every two weeks over last few weeks. every fish seems to be doing fine, but the neons just can't stay alive. I would like to start putting live plants in tank soon. Any suggestions or advise from the forum would be greatly appreciated. Nitrates and Nitrites seem fine, water is very hard where i live. any additional comments i need to make to inform you more of my tank,.if so, fire away.
 
What is your wpg? What plants you get will depend on this. I would do small, often water changes. Did you acclimate the fish and quarantine them before adding them to your tank?
 
im sorry for sounding dumb...what is wpg? I didn't quarantine...how do I do that. Just to be clear...im a novice with this fish tank. 32 and first tank
 
You don't sound dumb at all :) wpg is watt per gallon. Many people quarantine new fish before adding them to an established tank so if they are ill, it doesn't get to all of the fish. You do that by having a quarantine tank :) I've been having a bad run with my cardinal tetras, if that helps.
 
i dont even know how to test for that...is the the watt for my light:] sounds like i need to invest in a quarantine tank.
