invisible bioload? frustrating

I had a blood parrot years ago which I eventually gave to my nephews after they fell in love with him (they still have him. lol). That fish was never shy. If you go anywhere near the tank he franticly rubs his nose against the glass and will bite at your finger if you moved it along the glass. He definately has an attitude. The rest of the time he struts around trying to look tough.

He is the only fish in the tank and they only have a couple fake plants in there and a gargoyle statue that kinda resembles him, come to think of it. lol

I believe he is the other variety, though. He eventually lost any pink color and turned more striped. I was recently told there are 2. One turns salmon pink and the other doesn't.

Perhaps there is a personality difference as well.

Well, here's the new setup. If you look very carefully, you can actually see a trace of orange on the left side... That would be one of the stars of the tank.

The new look doesn't have the dense planted look I wanted, but I tried to make up for that by doing a lot of height changes, etc with the rocks. It took an extra few pounds of gravel, but it's tolerable.

The dither fish (Tetras) seem to like it.

well, maybe they'll eventually come out. some fish are just like that. intelligent fish with personality, such as BPs, tend to have thier won unique behavior pattens. maybe they are just naturally reclusive and will forever be that way. who knows?

We might have a problem here.... The line I hear is that Pugs are so ugly they're cute.. same with BP's.

Your GF and my wife both like BP's and Pugs.... And, um, well, they picked us too....

You don't think there's a connection, do you?

:joke:

 That is the best laugh I've had in ages! You're a funny guy!

Perhaps the BPs are being shy since you've been making some tank changes and such lately? I know my cories tend to freak a bit when things get moved and stick to one spot they've deemed safe.

Actually, the tank changes came about after a month or so of not seeing the BP's. I had been wanting to make some changes, but was waiting for them to chill a bit before doing it. Finally I decided it was time to make me happy with the tank, as pleasing them seems impossible. They have been in there for months.

It's frustrating, because we have wanted these fish for a couple of years, and now that we have them, we still have to go to the LFS to see what one looks like.

For a while they would come out to eat and actually begged food for a couple of weeks. Then as soon as the food was eaten, they disappeared again. NOw they don't even do that. Nothing has changed in the room, so it isn't that. They just have issues.

It's gotten to the point of ridiculous... We try to sneak into the living room so as not to spook them if they happen to be out...

I am thinking that since they know what food is, and they know where it comes from, I will not worry about it. I'll replace the dither fish with something more interesting than the Tetras so there is something to see in the tank. If the BP's come out to eat, fine. If they don't, that's fine too. They know where the food is. I think they will eventually get hungry enough to eat. If not, that's their problem - I mean, if they're supposed to be such intelligent fish and all... I am not going to overfeed the tank just to be sure there's something for them to find if they come out to forage.

Maybe you could take the 3 BP your have back and get 3 different ones if you really want BP's. Maybe it is just the ones you have that have a shy personality. Maybe if you got some different ones they would be different (if your goal is to have BP). If not and you are not happy then I would take them back and get something you are happy with.

i would give them their cave back, add some more tetras (if you can) and put in some more plants and some floating ones too and see what happens.
my BP has a cave, but he only goes in it once and a while to see if anyone else is in there that shouldnt. most of his time is spent in the plants of my tank
