But I don't get it how that judges how smart you are.

Its meant to test your ability to solve problems. But it doesn't really measure how 'smart' you are, because that can mean anything - creativity, emotional intelligence, common sense (none of these are tested in the IQ test - in fact if you are 'creative' it can count against you). also, it's very general - you could, say, be able to multiply five six-digit numbers instantly but would not do amazingly on an IQ test because you might not be strong on language.
