What's the difference between "free" iron and chelated iron? Do plants prefer one over the other?

Also...I can't seem to find this anywhere and I know I've read it a bunch of times...what is the recommended level of iron in the tank? Is it .1 or 1.0?
It's 1.0 mg/l (ppm). I believe its the chelated iron that plants can use. The other they can't. I'm a relatively newbie at plants but couldn't resist the chance to be wrong!
Hey Jamie, again, I came across some info that says iron should be .1 ppm and that was confirmed by another person who posted an answer to a different thread. Being that I have yet to experiment with iron and only have what I read to go on, I question the validity of my earlier statement. Hopefully someone else will confirm one way or the other.
Fe should be maintained at 0.1mg/l. Check this link out - it talks about pmdd and levels to be maintained.
