What's the most blatantly obvious "not for the hobby" fish that you've seen in your LFS?
I've seen plenty of pacus, SA red tail cats, and blue cats, but the fish available at the store near me trumps them all. They have true alligator gars for sale now. Why, oh why?

ID Sharks and bala sharks. Well pretty much anything with the name shark. Heck ina store in Houston I once saw dog fish. I mean come on.

I think a lot of the larger tankbusters should be in a section called "pond sized fish".
I also think that a picture of a full grown fish should be included along with its name and price.

That would be great! Make the pic lifesize too. Of course, I bet there are a lot of folks that would buy something like, say, that dogfish just to say, "Dude, I got a real shark, huh huh huh" and then keep it for a few months before they got bored with it and traded it in, or more likely, let it die before they get their next "toy". Oh, like say a great white shark, sperm whale, or baby seal... I can see it now -

"What, it swims! How was I supposed to know it needed air?!" As irresponsible as some shops are, a lot of times it comes down to ignorant or patently stupid aquarists as well. And, I use the term aquarist loosely.

yeah i'd agree with the larger sharks and pacus no doubt. clown knifes arent that uncommon around here but really arent for a home aquarium. some store had a freshwater stingray as well as full grown piranhas, red tailed catfish, and some smaller gars. i admit that the adult picture would help but people will still think that fish can safely grow "to fit their tank". i think the best way is just trying to educate all those interested in the aquarium hobby both those that are just starting and the more experienced ones.

Hey now.....
I love my bala shark. So much even, that when his buddy died 3 months ago, and my LFS finally had some that were about the same size as him(~4"), I bought them. They are in a 55 gallon for now, but, knowing the adult size, and that it will take him another year or more to get to that, I now have the perfect reason to build large tank! Or atleast buy a 100+ gallon tank!

But, all other reasoning aside, I do agree that certain fish should not be sold. Balas and Pacu's are fish that I like, and think that they should not be for sale. Course, you have the painted fish too. I'd like to paint the people who do that to the poor fishes.......with a needle that's the same size in scale to the one that they use on the fishes.....would be like stabbing you with a pencil(not the lead, the whole **** thing)over and over and over.......

There is a LFS that I won't buy from becasue they have a full grown amazon catfish in a 75 gallon tank. They fish is allmost 1/2 the lenght of the tank, and just about as wide......

I saw three sharks in a tank at a fish store once. The largest one was about 5 feet long, couldn't even straighten out in the tank he was in. the other two where about half that size.

How would anyone get that home? Let alone keep it?

Same fish store had rays and some other odd things I have never seen at a store before.

I do not mind LFS selling exotic and rare fish, I work in a fish store in NYC and I have people coming in to me with some weird animals.. everything from illegal (actual) alligators to a whole bunch of illegal reptiles, etc.. Some people do enjoy having something extreme and exotic, and that does not bother me.

What bothers me is what these people in fish stores will sell to people, people who have no clue what the hell they are doing. I have seen everything from up to three clown-loaches being sold for a 10 gallon tank, up to 10 Oscars for a 10 gallon tank, over a foot long Arrowana for a 20 gallon tank, etc.. etc.. etc.. I have witnessed my co-workers and even my managers doing the same thing just to make a sale.

10 OSCARS for a 10g tank!?!?! thats terrible! I wouldnt even put ONE in there let alone 10!
